The Sol’s Mother’s Day Incentive

Attend the Los Angeles Sol’s May 10 home game against the Boston Breakers at Home Depot Center and if the team wins you’ll get a free ticket to the club’s June 3 home game against the Chicago Red Stars.

Sol General Manager Charlie Naimo explains:

“We are certainly not guaranteeing a victory on May 10,” he said. “Instead, we are potentially rewarding those who have decided to share their Mother’s Day with us.”

As bets go, this is a pretty good one: the undefeated Sol are 3-0-1, atop the WPS standings and have yet to concede a goal.

You can get four tickets to the game plus a picture on the field with a Sol player for $49. Call 1-877-4-SOL-TIX (476-5849).

Nick, this is like the Galaxy giving away free tickets to season-ticket holders. It’s designed to make HDC look full (or, at least, respectfully populated) and avoid public embarassment. Yes, the economy has a lot to do with such a promotion. Nevertheless, I wonder about the long-term viability of WPS.

If WPS fails (which I hope it doesn’t), then Tonya Antonucci should take over as MLS commissioner. At least she knows business, has a brain, is tough and won’t kowtow to AEG, unlike some other commissioners we know.

Nick replies: Well, AEG couldn’t afford to make this offer for a Galaxy game, could they?
