Midweek Kicks

There are some advantages when the Internet, telephones and computer system go down simultaneously at work (keep in mind I work at a newspaper): I could remain blissfully ignorant Tuesday of the stunning Liverpool-Chelsea UEFA Champions League game until I could go home and watch it (ah, I miss the pre-blogging days some times) held on the eve of English football’s most tragic day and with memories of the even more amazing Liverpool comeback in the 2005 UEFA Champions League final still fresh.

Things aren’t due to be fixed at work until about 1 p.m. today so with any luck things will follow the same pattern with regard to the Manchester United-Porto game (which is a roundabout way of saying don’t expect much blogging).

So let’s play a little catch-up:

*Seattle’s Fredy Montero will be able to fully concentrate on the Sounders game with Chivas USA after the resolution of the legal issues hanging over him.

*We won’t be seeing Kasey Keller in goal for Seattle this weekend after his red card against Kansas City for handling the ball outside the box and he’s still angry about it.

BTW, here’s what Seattle Coach Sigi Schmid told me about Keller’s ejection when I spoke to him Monday:

“His hands were in tight. I think if it’s a defender that slides into an attacker in the same manner I think the referee gives him a yellow card and we move on. But because it’s a goalkeeper the instinct is to say he probably tried to bat it down with his hands. It’s a tough one to argue, but it it was a tough call. It’s not like he had his arms extended, it’s not like he threw his arms at the ball or anything like that. He basically slid into it like a defender would slide into a tackle.”

*Chivas USA will hold its second “Practice in the Community” at 10 a.m. Sunday at Montebello High School, 2100 West Cleveland Ave. Fans can take photos, get autographs and meet players after the practice. It’s free.

*North (Torrance) High’s Andre Turoldo and Matt Chavez were named Daily Breeze Player of the Year and Coach of the Year respectively.

*Lastly, the Sol is having a not to be missed ticket sale today in recognition of tax day for Sunday’s game at Home Depot Center.

Tuesday’s Column: Clash of the MLS Leaders

It’s not often I get excited about an MLS game this early in the season, but Saturday’s game between Chivas USA and the Seattle Sounders in Carson has the makings of a compelling game even if both coaches will tell you their respective teams are not yet firing on all cylinders and can get better.

Sounders Coach Sigi Schmid and Chivas USA utility man Carey Talley took the time to provide an excellent analysis of the game and I’ll share more of what they had to say on the weekend.

For now, here’s today’s column.

And here’s more on the big question mark Seattle has at goalkeeper.

Monday Name-Dropping

Busy (and slow-starting) day working on Tuesday’s column, a preview of this weekend’s game of the MLS season so far: Saturday’s match-up between MLS leader Chivas USA and second-place team the Seattle Sounders at Home Depot Center. I’ll post that in the morning. (The Galaxy play in San Jose Saturday, BTW).

Names in the news include:

*Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, who today became only the club’s third to be named MLS Player of the Week after making five saves in the 0-0 draw with Chivas USA on his MLS debut. Ricketts joins Kevin Hartman and Joe Cannon as the only goalkeepers in Galaxy history to keep a clean sheet in their first-ever start for the club.

The only other Galaxy goalkeepers named MLS Player of the Week: Jorge Campos (1996) and Kevin Hartman (1999 and 2002).

*Question: Will David Beckham improve his chances of playing for England at the 2010 World Cup sitting on the bench in Milan or playing in L.A.? Daily Mail.

*Midfielder Alberto Lopez, 17, from Aurora, IL, won the nationally-televised player search Sueo MLS 2009 and will receive an invitation to join the Chicago Fire Juniors.

*South (Torrance) High’s Lauren Hein was named Daily Breeze Player of the Year, while South’s Brad Gomez was named Coach of the Year.

Galaxy-Chivas USA Post-Game

This was a 0-0 tie that felt like a Chivas USA win.

They’re undefeated and atop MLS; the Galaxy are winless and tied for second from bottom.

Game story.

The common refrain tonight from Galaxy players and coaches was that they’re steadily improving, but you didn’t get the feeling anyone was ecstatic with the alleged progress.

Galaxy front office staff wore team scarves tonight in a show of solidarity with a team that seems to need the reassurance.

These were the first words out of Coach Bruce Arena’s mouth at the post-game press conference and pretty much summed things up from a Galaxy perspective:

“I think it was a fair result for both teams. There’s not much more to say than that.”

Translation: “We were lucky to escape with a point.”

For those so inclined there are more Galaxy quotes here (no point in me transcribing when it’s already done for me).

Reporter Phil Collin headed to the Chivas USA locker room, while I headed to the Galaxy quarters.

Here’s what Gregg Berhalter said about his red card, observing that he didn’t have much of a choice:

“I thought it was something that needed to be done quickly. … Instead of waiting (to see) if (defender) Omar (Gonzalez) could get across I just figured it was now or never. I was trying to convince the referee it was a yellow card, but I knew it was a red card.”

Berhalter on the fact that 31 fouls were called in the game:

“I like to see that in a derby game. It shows passion. It shows that players want to win the game and players want to get stuck in and that’s good to see, I think. Both teams showed passion and the will to win.”

Donovan had a different view of the cards:

“We clearly have to be disciplined better in certain areas. Gordo knows what he did, but those are mistakes we can’t make.”

Here’s Donovan on the overall performance:

“I thought we played quite well tonight. We’ve been getting better – you can see it every week in training, you can see guys getting more comfortable, more confident, becoming more vocal – even the young guys becoming better in the system. But now you need that win to get that confidence, to really believe it. Tonight a few guys were saying ‘gosh, I just want to get that first win under our belt.’ We’ve just got to keep going, we’re getting better I think everyone can see that.”

MLS Standings.

Final Result: Galaxy-Chivas USA

Galaxy 0 Chivas USA 0

With 10-man Seattle (Kasey Keller was sent off) dropping a 1-0 decision to Kansas City this evening, Chivas USA have ended the night as the only undefeated team in the Western Conference. The Galaxy, of course, have yet to record a victory this season.

Chivas USA pressed forward as the game wore on, trying to capitalize on their one-man advantage, but couldn’t break the stalemate before the crowd of 23,317.

That said, the Galaxy’s Landon Donovan may have had the best chance of the second half, rounding goalkeeper Zach Thornton and sending the ball goalward in the 74th minute only for Carey Talley to clear the ball and prevent it going in the net.

Galaxy defender A,J. DeLaGarza also had a 58th minute lob from long-range that required a touch from Thornton to tip it over the bar.

Chivas USA’s Sacha Kljestan also had a low 20-yard drive in stoppage time thwarted by goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.

More later.

Half Time: Galaxy-Chivas USA

Galaxy 0 Chivas USA 0

This is a typical derby with almost as many cards – five yellow and one red, the latter for Chivas USA’s Pablo Nagamura who received a second yellow for deliberately bringing down Landon Donovan, (who did his best to sell the foul and draw the ejection) just before the half ended – than shots on goal (7).

Referee Tim Weyland seems intent upon keeping players on a short leash, leaving both coaches shaking their heads on the sidelines at some of the disciplinary decisions.

Chivas USA have generally looked more threatening in attack than the Galaxy with both Eduardo Lillingston and Nagamura drawing good saves from Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts within a couple of minutes.

Lillingston and Donovan both had relatively quiet halves, although Sean Franklin is again looking much more comfortable going forward in midfield up the right wing than he did in defense.

Best chance of the half for Chivas USA fell to Jesse Marsch who saw a chance from about three yards saved by Ricketts.

Ricketts is looking considerably more comfortable than Josh Saunders did between the posts for the Galaxy, while 35-year-old Gregg Berhalter is looking solid on his MLS (but not Galaxy) debut.

Best atmosphere of the year at Home Depot Center, too, with an enthused crowd, Chivas USA fans beating drums and the L.A. Riot Squad brandishing inflatable goats.

Updated: Lillingston was pulled at the half for 10-man Chivas USA, as was Gerson Mayen; Coach Preki has brought in Alecko Eskandarian, who appears to be playing alone up front now, and Bojan Stepanovic.
