Waiting for the Weekend & the Galaxy Curse Continues

The games that matter:

1:30 p.m. Saturday ESPN2 Galaxy at San Jose Earthquakes
5 p.m. Saturday KFTR San Luis at Chicago Fire
7 p.m. Saturday Tigres at Chivas USA
11 a.m. Sunday ESPN Brazil-Italy
11:25 a.m. Sunday ESPN2 Egypt-U.S.
3 p.m. Sunday Fox Soccer Channel FC Gold Pride at Sol

Meanwhile, the Galaxy tradition of shipping out apparently subpar players only to see them become reborn elsewhere continues in Portland with former goalkeeper Steve Cronin and in the nation’s capital where Josh Wicks is supplanting Louis Crayton.

But former Chivas USA midfielder Panchito Mendoza has seen his time at the mothership come to an end.

I see your overall point Nick, but to state that Cronin and Wicks have been reborn is a stretch.
Wicks GAA of 1.29 is respectable, but he still is very shaky and the Sounders managed to get three past him on Wednesday. Being ahead of Louis Crayton and Milos Kocic in GK the pecking order isn’t all that impressive either.
Cronin suffered from confidence issues and is playing at the level where he feels comfortable. Start him on any MLS team and he’ll show how far his “rebirth” has really taken him.
Both players are still subpar in my opinion. I get the feeling your frustration with the team is skewing your perspective a bit…

Nick replies: Actually, I completely agree with you. I used the word from the perspective that their current teams appear very happy with their respective performances and that both players have consequently revived their careers.

The Wolf has a point, but I must add that the pressure surrouding the Galaxy is intimidating and stifling. Why do you think Bruce Arena signed such veterans as Berhalter, Kovalenko, Kirovski and Sannneh? They have the personalities to deal with that crap. Why do you think the team plays a fundamentally lackluster style? Because management (i.e., Leiweke) will pounce on any mistake. That pressure comes from above (i.e., Leiweke) and until he realizes the error of his ways, not even Beckham and Donovan will save his sorry ass.

My bad. Maybe I read too much into the headline “Galaxy Curse Continues” and the use of the word “Reborn” in this case.

Nick replies: No worries. Readers like you keep me honest and provide valuable perspective and context. It’s actually one of the main reasons I like blogging; immediate feedback, immediate criticism. Thanks for reading – and writing.

I’m pretty sure that NY Metro/RedBull is 1st in the category of passing out born-again players.
At least we’re 1st in something.
