Televised Soccer Update: UEFA Champions League & EPL

This morning is a reminder of how quickly we’ve gone from famine to feast when it comes to watching televised soccer in this country.

Here it is around noon on Wednesday and as a DirecTV subscriber I have a choice of a UEFA Champions League mix on Channel 461 although at the moment it’s only showing two of up to eight games (why I’m not seeing the game between Moldova’s FC and Greece’s Olympiakos since I subscribe to Fox Soccer Channel is a mystery to me though).

DirecTV channels are showing games (for the first time ever) so I could check out Timisoara-Stuttgart on Channel 462 or Copenhagen-Apoel Nicosia on Channel 463 if I was so inclined. (DirecTV channels 461-466 will show games live).

Up on Fox Sports Southwest on Channel 676, (yup, Fox channels other than FSC are now showing games, too) it’s Celtic-Arsenal in hi def.

And ESPN channels will continue showing games as they have in year’s past.

Indeed, it’s become so difficult to keep track of what’s on where and when that Fox has unveiled a television schedule and dedicated UEFA Champions League news Web site here.

BTW, the UEFA Champions League has a slightly different format this year. Here’s a primer.

This latest television soccer development comes just five days after ESPN announced hours before the curtain rose on a new EPL season that the league would return to the network after an absence of more than 10 years (games will also continue on FSC and other outlets).

There will be almost 50 games in hi def on ESPN2, something that will hopefully spur FSC on to do the same sooner rather than later.

For instance, next up at 7 a.m. Saturday is Wigan-Manchester United, followed at noon Monday, Aug. 24 by Liverpool-Aston Villa.

Don’t let the batteries in that remote control run out.

Tuesday’s Column: Sol Hope to Restore their Shine in WPS Finale

The WPS Championship game is Saturday at Home Depot Center.

It’s the subject of today’s column.

Call 877-4-SOL-TIX for more info.

BTW, Marta, midfielder McCall Zerboni and defenders Johanna Frisk and Sharolta Nonen will hold a clinic for several youth clubs and sign autographs for fans at the Puma store on Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Sol also tweeted this morning that several Sol players will be signing autographs beginning at 2 p.m. at El Segundo’s Whole Foods Market.

And here’s more from a Sky Blue FC perspective.

Chivas USA Loaned Young American Striker from Mothership

His name is Jesus Padilla, he’s 22-years-old and he was born in San Jose.

Part of CD Guadalajara’s youth system since age 14, Padilla has scored one goal in two starts (he has 24 Mexican league appearances total).

“Jess is a talented, explosive attacking player who will help our team as we work toward a spot in the playoffs,” said Chivas USA Coach Preki.

Updated: Chivas USA will introduce him at a midday Tuesday press conference at the HDC.

A red card offense?

Full disclosure: I skipped Saturday’s Galaxy-Sounders game at Home Depot Center for a wedding and another anniversary (where did the 30 years from Aug. 14, 1979 go?)

BTW, since I’m all about milestones congrats to Jesse Marsch on making his 100th Chivas USA appearance Saturday.

Between glimpses of what looked like a tedious Chivas USA-Red Bulls game and a 10-man Galaxy that never looked like challenging Seattle in the second half after David Beckham was sent off early, it doesn’t appear I missed much.

I’ll not bother to post highlights.

Galaxy game story.

Chivas USA-New York Red Bulls: Too Horrid to Watch?

Well, at some point you have to ask that question.

The level of ineptness that will be on display later today is summed up well here.

You’ve gotta love Chivas USA Coach Preki’s response though: on Friday the club announced the signing of 20-year-old Columbian defender Yamith Cuesta on loan from Colombian side Expreso Rojo. Season changing signing, that (ahem).

Also, striker Ante Razov (who is yet to play this season anyway) and defender Jim Curtin (who has made all of two starts) were placed on the club’s disabled list Friday and are pretty much done for the year.

From the club’s press release:

Curtin has been added to the Disabled List due to a peroneus brevis tear in his left ankle, an injury which will require surgery, tentatively scheduled for Aug. 26, which will force the defender to miss between four and six months. Razov, a Los Angeles native and Chivas USA’s all-time leading scorer, is on the Disabled List due to right ankle tendonitis. The forward underwent right ankle surgery on Jan. 30 and has not played a match in 2009 for the Red-and-White.

Brave souls should tune in at 4 p.m. on Prime.

Galaxy’s Donovan Has H1N1 Virus

It’s unknown if Landon Donovan will play Saturday against Seattle.

Updated:

I’m told by reporter Phil Collin who is out at the HDC that David Beckham didn’t attend today’s Galaxy practice. Hmm, there wouldn’t be one rule for him and another for the rest of the team would there?

Collin says Coach Bruce Arena said whether Donovan plays Saturday will be a game time decision.

Wonder if they’ll hand out free surgical masks to the first 10,000 fans through the gate for the game against the Seattle Sounders emblazoned with the phrase “Landon Donovan is sick”?

Update 2: From the Galaxy press release:

“Head Coach and General Manager Bruce Arena has instructed Landon Donovan, David Beckham and Chris Birchall to take the day off to recuperate from their recent international trips and to prepare for Saturday’s match against the Seattle Sounders FC at The Home Depot Center.”

Update 3: Donovan may play Saturday.

Yet more updates: The U.S. Soccer response.

The German response.

Finally, here’s a non-swine flu related (mostly) pre-game analysis.

Galaxy old boy Pete Vagenas is looking forward to the game.

Locals Named to Hermann Trophy Watch Lists

Ten players with local ties were named to the lists for the trophy awarded annually to the best male and female collegiate players in the country:

*Also named for the Bruins was midfielder and PAC-10 Player of the Year Michael Stephens, who is from Napierville, Ill.

*Upland’s Lauren Barnes, a junior defender at UCLA, was one of 45 female players named to the list.

World Cup Qualifying Roundup & More

Relief for Mexican coach Javier Aguirre after Israel Castro’s tying goal against the U.S. (AP Photo).

A valiant U.S. effort fell about eight minutes short today against Mexico. In large measure, the U.S. ran out of gas in a territorial game they mainly ceded to Mexico in a bid to survive the conditions.

BTW, does anybody know if they’ve launched a search and rescue effort for missing U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley?

Here are the CONCACAF standings and the other result today in the region.

Here are all the World Cup qualifying results.

Meanwhile, a “pedestrian” David Beckham was replaced at the half of England’s draw with the Netherlands.

Mexico-U.S. World Cup Qualifying Preview

I’ll update this post as events warrant and kickoff nears.

The essentials: The 1 p.m. game is in Spanish on Telemundo and in English on little known cable channel mun2, which has a free preview on DirecTV channel 203 and Dish channel 838, while Time Warner will also preview the channel. Plan your (long) lunch accordingly.

Updated: I’m told the only live online broadcast of the game is here for those stuck at work and/or without television access.

Mexican Coach Javier Aguirre (right) is a little tense though. i-21059cb74f25bf66ba385160ff4827df-javier0002.jpg

The extras: Even ESPN is taking the game seriously: a 30-minute SportsCenter 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Special from outside Estadio Azteca begins at 12:30 p.m. But don’t be lulled into thinking the game airs on that channel: for the first time in its 30-year history ESPN airs a live pre-match show for a soccer match it won’t televise.

Viewing parties: The Galaxy are promoting two from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ye Olde Kings Head pub, 116 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica and The Olde Ship, 1120 W. 17th St., Santa Ana.

Know: Here are the lineups the last time these nations faced each other in February in the 2-0 U.S. win in Columbus, Ohio to open the final round of World Cup qualifying:
Mexico-Oswaldo Sanchez; Aaron Galindo, Carlos Salcido, Rafael Marquez, Ricardo Osorio; Leandro Augusto, Alberto Medina (Antonio Naelson, 60th), Pavel Pardo; Carlos Ochoa, Nery Castillo (Israel Martinez, 34th), Giovani dos Santos (Omar Bravo, 72nd)

United States-Tim Howard; Frankie Hejduk, Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Heath Pearce; Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Sacha Kljestan (Ricardo Clark, 86th), DaMarcus Beasley; Landon Donovan, Brian Ching (Jozy Altidore, 83rd).

Of course, Pearce, Kljestan and Beasley were dropped for this game, while Frankie Hejduk is also absent.

I’m not going to pick the team anymore than I’m going to make predictions (2-2 with a late U.S. goal crushing Mexico’s collective soul. Oh, sorry did I say that out loud?) but you can guess the basic structure based on the above XI.

Add in Spector and Bocanegra as the starting full backs, while DeMerit and Onyewu will likely occupy central defense. In midfield, how about Bradley, Feilhaber, Clark, and Dempsey with Donovan and Davies (not Ching) partnering up front? And yeah, Altidore sits to start. But I don’t pick the team. Just sayin’.

Read more idle speculation and uninformed opinion in my Tuesday column.

Predictions and discussion welcome.

Updated 8 a.m.

*Brian Ching tweeted around 8 a.m. and sounds like he’s going to get psyched with some kick ass tunes before kickoff: “Just listening to some mellow music now but, building a pregame playlist. Got some Breaking Benjamins, Offspring, Disturbed, Godsmack.”

*And, as always, the Mexicans need to watch out for the proverbial elephant zebra in the room..

*Mexican Coach Javier Aguirre says he does expect any surprises from the U.S., but look at that body language – what does he expect?
