The game is eight minutes old and the Galaxy are up 1-0.
Landon Donovan got the ball out on the right wing to Sean Franklin whose cross found the head of Edson Buddle for his second goal in as many games to start the season. Michael Umana, who had problems with the pace of MLS a few years back when he played for the Galaxy, was found wanting on this play, too, and was unable to catch up to Buddle to disrupt the cross.
Both teams made changes to their opening day lineups, although I had to wait until the teams took to the field because the Chivas USA lineup makes for curious reading.
Jonny Bornstein, listed as a midfielder (!) is actually in central defense as usual, while usual holding midfielder Marcelo Saragosa, listed as taking Bornstein’s spot, is in midfield as usual. Go figure.
Rookie Blair Gavin moves into midfield, while Michael Lahoud takes a seat on the bench, and Justin Braun moves into the attack. Osael Romero is in midfield, while Jorge Flores was also benched.
Chivas USA XI (4-4-2) as listed: Kennedy, Trujillo, Umana, Saragosa, Jazic, Kljestan, Gavin, Romero, Bornstein, Braun, Galindo.
Maicon Santos returns after injury to take a place on the bench.
The Galaxy make two changes: Brazilian Alex Cazumba, subbed in for an injured Eddie Lewis on opening day, retains his place, while Chris Birchall starts in place of the benched Mike Magee.
The Galaxy XI (4-4-2): Ricketts, Franklin, Gonzalez, leonardo, Dunivant, Birchall, Kovalenko, Juninho, Cazumba, Buddle, Donovan.
Forward Bryan Jordan has recovered from injury sufficiently to merit a place on the bench.
The game is on ESPN2.
