The biggest upset of the World Cup so far

Was this morning in the final contest of the first round of games as the uber-talented Spanish, among the favorites in the tournament, stayed true to their history of abject failure in the World Cup by losing 1-0 to a resolute and stolid Switzerland.

The goal was a series of fortuitous touches and bounces (three? more?), but the well-marshaled Swiss made their luck, while reigning European champions Spain still looks like the World Cup owes them something (it doesn’t).

The game story is here.

Now that’s the sort of result that adds a major (and welcome) element of uncertainty into the tournament. And it was one of the best games so far.

The result of the early game between Chile and Honduras is here.

One more game on the docket this morning at 11:30 on ESPN, Uruguay-South Africa. Can the hosts continue to surprise after tying Mexico in the tournament opener?
