Thursday Kicks: Galaxy injury update & more

*Reporter Phil Collin headed out to Galaxy training Wednesday to chat with newly-crowned MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Donovan Ricketts and updates the slight knock he took in last Sunday’s game, as well as Todd Dunivant’s injury. Details here.

*The tactical and strategic battle between two of the league’s most experienced coaches – the Galaxy’s Bruce Arena and the Sounders’ Sigi Schmid – was as fascinating last Sunday as the on-field action. The Seattle Times takes a closer look at the coaching match-up.

*Reporter Elliott Almond of sister paper the San Jose Mercury News invokes that amazing four-goal playoff comeback by the Earthquakes against the Galaxy in 2003 – and San Jose is only facing a 1-0 deficit on the road tonight in New York (5 p.m. ESPN2. Thierry Henry, incidentally, is not expected to play.

*Striker Mattias Bonvehi scored with just 32 seconds remaining Wednesday as the Cal State Northridge men (3-13-2, 2-6-1 BWC) upset seventh-ranked UC Irvine (13-2-3, 6-1-2 BWC) in Orange County.

The home loss snapped UC Irvine’s eight-game winning streak, handed them their first conference loss of the season and gave the Anteaters a taste of their own medicine – the Matadors battled back from a one-goal deficit to win on the road, just as UC Irvine had done two weeks ago in Northridge.

*ESPN released today the results of a study conducted during the World Cup that concludes “enjoyment” increased by all of 5 percent to 70 percent for fans viewing in 3D compared with regular HD. Five percent? Woo hoo. No wonder there have been reports recently questioning whether 3D is really striking a chord with viewers.
