Wednesday Kicks: Galaxy win final preseason scrimmage & more

*The Galaxy beat UCLA 2-1 in Carson today, Juninho and Landon Donovan getting the goals, although Coach Bruce Arena said his side could have had four or five.

“Juninho is a much better player this year,” Arena said when asked what player had most impressed him over last year. “He’s grown into this league and into this team.”

First choice goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts did not play after picking up a knock in the friendly last week in San Diego, but the injury is “not serious,” Arena said.

*As expected, Chivas USA announced Wednesday the signing of midfielder “Panchito” Mendoza and goalkeeper Sergio Arias, a star of Mexico’s U-17 World Cup winning team in 2005, on loan from Chivas de Guadalajara. The popular Mendoza returns after making 111 appearances for the MLS club between 2005 and 2009. The pair have been with the club virtually all of preseason and their signings were widely anticipated.

*However, time may be running out for another CD Guadalajara product Jesus “Gringo” Panchito, who is from San Jose. More here.

*ESPN announced today that the erudite Adrian Healey, a play-by-play commentator at the 2010 World Cup, will be its primary voice for MLS telecasts this season. That’s the good news.

The bad news is John “Brilliant!” Harkes returns with his blindingly obvious analytical observations, too.

*The USWNT won the Algarve Cup today.
