Toronto FC’s disgruntled designated player Dwayne De Rosario was traded to New York Friday for midfielder Tony Tchani, midfielder/defender Danleigh Borman and the Red Bulls’ first round 2012 MLS SuperDraft selection.

That means he won’t face Chivas USA in Toronto Saturday, a game that will air on Prime at 10 a.m.

De Rosario travels to New York tonight and will be available for selection for the Red Bulls’ MLS home game Saturday against the Houston Dynamo.

“Dwayne has been one of the league’s best players over the past several years and we are thrilled that he is a Red Bull,” said Red Bull New York General Manager and Sporting Director Erik Soler. “He is one of the most dangerous players MLS has seen in the attacking third and he is a true leader both on and off the field. We had to trade Tony and Danleigh – two very talented, young players who both need more playing time with a first team in MLS to develop their potential. At the end, we think this is a massive step in our quest towards the MLS Cup title.”

Maybe. It’s certainly a risk because De Rosario, 32, has never really clicked in Toronto after playing an integral part in leading Houston to back to back MLS titles in 2006 and 2007.

Whether that’s the fault of the player or represents yet another misstep by the TO FO is a matter of debate.

The Canadian international and three-time Canadian Player of the Year had 27 goals and 10 assists over 57 appearances with Toronto, which isn’t a bad scoring clip, however.
