Drawn into Group A, the Galaxy face Alajuelense of Costa Rica, the winner of the preliminary round series between the Mexican Clausura runner-up (either Morelia or Pumas) and the Caribbean club championship runner-up, as well as the winner of the preliminary round series between Honduran Clausura champion Motagua and Guatemala’s Municipal.

Monarcas Morelia and Pumas UNAM play Sunday.

The Caribbean club championship is at the semifinal stage and three of the four from the Puerto Rico Islanders (which knocked out the Galaxy in the preliminary round last year), Alpha United of Guyana, Defence Force of Trinidad and Tobago and Tempete of Haiti will qualify for the preliminary round, Galaxy officials said.

The group stage begins the week of Aug. 16.
