Galaxy sign former Dallas defender Kyle Davies

The Oakland native was waived by Dallas May 5 and picked up by the Galaxy the next day.

He is eligible to play Saturday against Chivas USA after agreeing contract terms.

The 22-year-old started his pro career with England’s Southampton in 2007, was selected by Real Salt Lake in a weighted lottery in 2009 and was traded to Dallas less than two weeks later.

He made 10 starts for Dallas in 2009, but broke his arm in the 2010 season opener and missed the next six months through injury.

From the Galaxy:

A former U.S. Youth international, Davies was the captain for the U.S. Under-20 National Team at the 2009 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt where he was a teammate of current Galaxy players Brian Perk and Michael Stephens. He also played for the U.S. Under-17 National Team and was a member of U.S. Soccer’s Residency Program, which he joined in August 2005.

Friday Football: Waiting for the Chivas USA-Galaxy SuperClasico

It’s at 7 p.m. Saturday at Home Depot Center (live on ESPN2).

In other local soccer news:

*Remember when the Galaxy foolishly shot their collective mouths off about being a so-called “Super Club,” a hollow boast that roughly coincided with the worst period in the club’s history thanks to Ruud Gullit, Alexi Lalas et al.

Well, now it’s Chivas USA’s turn to sound silly babbling on about eventually fielding only local players:

“We will play only with South California players,” Rodrigo Morales, the club’s recently-hired vice president of marketing and sponsorship told The Sporting News. “It will be the real thing — homegrown players through development rather than hiring stars.

“We believe the artificial passion comes from those teams that have to buy expensive players and create stars. It’s a very Hollywood way of creating a fan base. That’s how you compare real to artificial. We have real passion for the game; they build a fan base through the incorporation of big stars.”

Anyone know what a South California player is, BTW? Does that include Mexican immigrants or only those born locally? So is this a tacit admission fans shouldn’t expect the long-awaited DP Chivas USA has talked about incessantly, but never signed? Does Chivas USA even have a definition?

Of course, the Galaxy have always spoken about building a roster that reflects the entire community, often drafting kids who have played at local colleges and yes, hiring big-name stars. Hollywood, after all, is part of Southern California.

And the Chivas USA perspective would sound a little more convincing if they had a larger fan base outside of the cheap, bulk tickets sold to AYSO teams the club seems to be largely relying on these days judging by all the high-pitched screams of kids you hear in the stadium on game days.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a successful Chivas USA and am disappointed more local fans haven’t embraced the team because what’s good for the club is good for MLS.

But is this the way to go about it? Time will tell.

Here, incidentally, is what Galaxy fan group the LA Riot Squad had to say about the Chivas USA initiative on their Facebook page:

“Chivas USA couldn’t be less “L.A.” if they tried. Now they want to have a 100% Southern Californian roster. L.A. is an International City with people from every corner of the world, not a locals only xenophobic exclusive ghetto. Still One Team in L.A.!”

*U.S. Coach Bob Bradley will announce the Gold Cup squad at 7 a.m. Monday on ussoccer.com.

*UCLA, which returns every starter from last season’s squad that made the NCAA quarterfinals, has released their 2011 schedule, which kicks off Aug. 27 at Louisville with a rematch of the quarterfinal game.

UCLA will play the first of 11 home games at Drake Stadium on Sept. 9 against Saint Mary’s. Other home schedule highlights: UC Santa Barbara Sept. 16 and the Pac-12 (weird to read, huh?) opener Sept. 30 against Cal.

Returning UCLA players including 2010 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and U.S. Under-20 international Kelyn Rowe (assuming a European club doesn’t offer him a contract, I suppose), fellow U.S. Under-20 international Eder Arreola and last year’s team MVP goalkeeper Brian Rowe.

Here’s the complete UCLA schedule.

*Finally, Galaxy fans can rejoice: Should David Beckham skip out on the Galaxy midweek as expected you can watch him trundle around a soccer field after all since Fox Soccer Channel announced today it will televise Gary Neville’s testimonial game Tuesday against Juventus (live 11:30 a.m.) from England. Won’t that be fun?

Also expected to play: Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Ryan Giggs.

I’ll have a full SuperClasico preview Saturday.

A salute to Shooter

I hesitate to turn this into the “Everything you wanted to know, but were afraid to ask about the LA Riot Squad” blog, but I wanted to acknowledge this modest (yet excellent) LA Weekly profile by former Daily Breeze colleague Gene Maddaus on a huge Galaxy fan and member of the fan group nick-named Shooter (I’d better – I gave Gene the profile idea).

I’ve known Shooter for years, although the first few times I met him he constantly re-introduced himself to me for reasons that are apparent in the above profile.

Good to see he’s still alive and kickin’ (literally).

Beckham to miss Galaxy MLS game Wednesday to make another trip to England, Riot Squad plan protest (sort of)*

*Post updated (scroll down)

Officially, Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena and David Beckham claimed today after practice that a decision has yet to be made about the former Manchester United midfielder missing Wednesday’s MLS game against the Houston Dynamo in Carson to play in a testimonial for a former Manchester United teammate the day before in England.

Unofficially, according to reporter Phil Collin, who made it out to training today for the weekly Landon Donovan/David Beckham media meet and greet, it sounds like a done deal.

Beckham says the decision will be made after Saturday’s game against Chivas USA, although it is clear he wants to go and play in England.

Arena said he planned to rest Beckham for the Dynamo game anyway because the Galaxy plays three games in seven days, just as was done when a Galaxy-less Beckham played Philadelphia last week.

Whether a transatlantic round trip journey and playing in an exhibition game in England amounts to resting is up for debate. But Phil Collin tells me that Arena said something along the lines of Beckham knows how to travel and it’s not like he sits in the middle seat in coach.

It would be Beckham’s second trip to England within two months; he also attended last month’s royal wedding (on a Friday) and then flew to Dallas to meet the team their for their game Sunday.

BTW, it appears the Riot Squad plans to “comment” publicly at the Dynamo game if Beckham does indeed miss it.

I don’t want to spoil the surprise (or alert stadium security for that matter), but keep your eye out for an apt protest of some kind from fans who don’t appreciate Beckham missing a competitive game in this country for a meaningless one back home, no matter how much lipstick Arena wants to put on this pig, er, decision.

I should have a quote or two a little later from Phil, BTW.

Oh, and while we’re at it the Landon Donovan to Roma rumors are just a rumor says LD.

But is it kind of like that rumor about him playing at Everton? We’ll see.

Updated

As promised, here are a couple of quotes via reporter Phil Collin:

David Beckham:

At the moment it’s not been decided (whether I attend the game in England), but I think the organization and Bruce know how important it is for Gary (Neville). They will decide after the game on Saturday and then we’ll wait and see. It’s such a tremendous occasion for Gary, celebrating it in the way he’s going to be doing it. That era, the ’92 era, was such an important phase of our lives. It’s a big occasion.

“It’s important for me to be there for Gary more than anything. That’s the big thing but the final decision is obviously up to the boss and the organization so we’ll see. I’m concentrating on this game on Saturday and then we’ll see what happens.”

Bruce Arena:

I would think that we would be resting David in one of the games next week. That’s what we’ve done in the early going and there’s no reason to believe that we won’t continue to do that. I think the most important thing for all of our players is get them through the first half of the season because it’s been challenging. They’re not quite
as fit as they’re going to be, but at some point the older players can’t be run into the ground. That’s why we’re doing our best to keep David healthy. To me it makes sense that he doesn’t play three games in a week and if we can avoid that, we’re going to do that.

Asked whether Beckham can go with his blessing and whether travel equates to rest, Arena said:

“We will discuss (the trip) at the proper time. This week the focus is on this (Chivas USA) game and nothing else.

“He probably won’t be back in economy in the middle seat if he traveled. I’m sure his travel would be a little easier than most people are accustomed to. I think he probably has done that more than the president of the United States. I think he understands how to travel if that’s the case.

Clarification

I’ve been told by a long-standing LA Riot Squad member the word “protest” in the headline on this post may be a little strong and in any case the LA Riot Squad as a group isn’t planning anything.

But some individuals within the group are indeed talking about making what could be called a statement or commentary about Beckham’s likely absence with a sign that could be displayed at the Dynamo game.

Guess we’ll wait and see if it actually happens.

Galaxy learn CONCACAF Champions League opponents

57373-ccllogo.jpg Well, sort of.

Drawn into Group A, the Galaxy face Alajuelense of Costa Rica, the winner of the preliminary round series between the Mexican Clausura runner-up (either Morelia or Pumas) and the Caribbean club championship runner-up, as well as the winner of the preliminary round series between Honduran Clausura champion Motagua and Guatemala’s Municipal.

Monarcas Morelia and Pumas UNAM play Sunday.

The Caribbean club championship is at the semifinal stage and three of the four from the Puerto Rico Islanders (which knocked out the Galaxy in the preliminary round last year), Alpha United of Guyana, Defence Force of Trinidad and Tobago and Tempete of Haiti will qualify for the preliminary round, Galaxy officials said.

The group stage begins the week of Aug. 16.

Wednesday Kicks: Real Madrid in San Diego & more

*MLS confirmed this morning that the much-discussed Real Madrid-Chivas friendly at Qualcomm Stadium is a go with the date set for Wednesday, July 20 as expected. That gives Southern California fans two chances to see Cristiano Ronaldo et al; the Galaxy play in a previously-announced game against the Spanish powerhouse July 16 at the Coliseum.

Ticket details have yet to be announced for the San Diego game; individual tickets for the Galaxy-RM game have yet to go on sale.

More details here.

*Following up on the previously reported Landon Donovan to Roma rumor, MLSSoccer.com has confirmed Roma’s new American owner is “obviously” looking everywhere for players, although “obviously” they’re not naming names , but “obviously” they’re targeting Americans. Obviously.

*The Galaxy will obviously learn most of their group opponents (pending the completion of the preliminary round games) when thedraw for the CONCACAF Champions League is made in New York today.

*The U.S. women play a second World Cup tune-up game against Japan at 4 p.m. today on ESPN2.

Tuesday’s column: MLS rivalry to live up to its billing Saturday?

i-6f526b1d2ea2f7918f0194ef705d0526-superpostersmall.jpgChivas USA takes a dig at its rival in this SuperClasico promotional poster (although given the host’s tepid fan base it strains credulity more than a little). But will the game live up to the hype?

*With two steadily improving teams in Chivas USA and the Galaxy, this Saturday’s derby promises much.

Here’s my take on whether the game will deliver.

*Rumor of the Day: The Italian press is reporting that the Galaxy’s Landon Donovan could be a transfer target for Roma. Whether this report has any legitimacy or merely sounds like a plausible rumor that will sell newspapers because the club has a new American owner remains to be seen, however.

Updated

Someone at MLS clearly has too much time on their hands. Here’s a break-down of the SuperClasico by the numbers for those of you who can’t get enough of this sort of thing:

.739 – LA Galaxy’s all-time winning percentage against its roommate, Chivas USA, who joined MLS and moved into The Home Depot Center in 2005. Including two MLS Cup Playoff games and one Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match, LA holds a 14-3-6 record against the Rojiblancos.

3 – Chivas USA’s all-time victories against the Galaxy (one in 2006, two in 2007).

7 – Combined goals scored by the two clubs in their most recent games.

8 – Players that have appeared at least one SuperClsico for each side (Current Chivas USA players Tristan Bowen, Ante Jazic, and Paulo Nagamura; plus Alecko Eskandarian, Alan Gordon, Mike Muoz, Marcelo Saragosa, and Michael Umaa). Another nine players wore the Galaxy’s shirt prior to 2005 and later played for Chivas USA.

10 – Shutouts by the Galaxy against Chivas USA in 22 encounters (MLS regular season and playoffs).

17 – Games played and combined goals (9) and assists (8) for Landon Donovan in the SuperClsico rivalry.

108 – Feet between the doors of Chivas USA and LA Galaxy front offices at The Home Depot Center.

450 – Minutes Chivas USA went without scoring vs. LA in league play, from Aug. 14, 2009 to Alan Gordon’s goal in the second meeting last year.

1,342 – Days since Chivas USA last defeated the Galaxy (3-0 on Sept. 13, 2007). By Saturday, it will have been 1,346 days.

27,998 – Average attendance for 20 regular season SuperClsicos.

MLS in Vegas & more

*For most Southern Californians, Las Vegas is the road trip so local soccer fans would undoubtedly welcome an MLS team there. Turns out, so would MLS Commish Don Garber. Party on.

*United Soccer Leagues released a revised schedule for the LA Blues and USL pro in the wake of the early-season demise of three Puerto Rican clubs.

*Did anyone take note that the U.S. women beat Japan over the weekend?

*It’s the Galaxy-Chivas USA derby this weekend (7 p.m. Saturday ESPN2), a game set up perfectly by the two clubs’ excellent results this weekend (scroll down for video highlights and details). I’ll have more on the game in Tuesday’s column.

Final: Chivas USA at New York Red Bulls

New York Red Bulls 2 Chivas USA 3

After narrowly missing out on a point last weekend at the home of the best team in MLS, Real Salt Lake, Chivas USA went one better – and sent a message in the process to their next opponents, the Western Conference-leading Galaxy, – beating the Eastern Conference leaders Sunday who lost on their own turf this season for the first time this evening.

It was the perfect response to the Galaxy’s best performance of the season
this past weekend, a dominating 4-1 home win over lowly Kansas, and sets up a perfectly poised SuperClasico Saturday against the Galaxy at Home Depot Center. Chivas USA has only one loss in their last seven games.

Much-maligned Chivas USA striker Justin Braun finally got around to scoring his first goal of the season – and his second and his third – forcing New York to respond at home and finding them wanting.

New York’s reaction to the loss was somewhat condescending – suggesting Chivas USA had not as much won the game as they had lost it. But Chivas USA is a tight group who will surprise some people with their resilience – they sure surprised New York – and created chances the Red Bulls proved incapable of fashioning.

“This group is unbelievably motivated,” said Chivas USA Coach Robin Fraser. “They have tremendous character. If you look at this season so far, some of the results we’ve had, the effort with which we’ve played, they’re extremely motivated, and a focused group. They’re very much concentrating on getting better and better every week, and finding a way to get results. Tonight was a prime example of a team that gutted out a result.”

Notable: Chris Cortez, who Chivas USA officially announced they had signed around 5:30 p.m., – good thing the start of the game was delayed – made his MLS debut as a 69th minute sub after scoring four goals in four reserve team games. Cortez had worked his way up through the youth academy.

*Game story.

*The New York perspective.
