Bulls brain trust: Thierry Henry, coach Hans Backe, and Rafael Marquez meet the press in Montreal before New York’s midweek friendly for the Frenchman’s French-Canadian fans against the Impact (AP Photo).

*Will Chivas USA catch the Eastern Conference leaders at a vulnerable moment after a long road trip?

*Chivas USA fans will keep their eye on New York’s Mexican icon Rafa Marquez, who has his eye on another World Cup appearance.

*With a road win Chivas USA can close the gap with the teams above them in the Western Conference after Portland and Seattle could only manage a 1-1 tie Saturday in the long-anticipated Pacific Northwest derby.

Final: Galaxy-Sporting Kansas City

Galaxy 4 Sporting Kansas City 1

i-1fd3c1dcd90a4e299d3815b6459f31ef-beckhamtackle.jpgDon’t try this at home kids: David Becklham leaves his feet to flail at Sporting Kansas City defender Aurelien Collin during the second half of Saturday’s game in Carson (AP Photo).

*Full disclosure: I missed the game to observe my wife’s (ahem) birthday. But I watched the game and there’s not much analysis needed for this one anyway.

Everything went to script for the Galaxy except the opening goal. Landon Donovan continues to fire on all cylinders to score twice and lead the league in scoring, David Beckham scores from a free kick, even Juan Pablo Angel finally scored and Chad Barrett, who has similar trouble scoring, instead concentrated on creating two.

Everything went wrong for a dismal and defenseless (almost literally) Kansas City team playing a brutal stretch of 10 consecutive road games before their stadium opens (and who miss the unfit Omar Bravo) except for the gift of the opening goal. Seems they met Chivas USA at exactly the right moment of the season to win their season-opener in Carson and haven’t duplicated the result since.

Reporter Phil Collin has the game report.

Next for the Galaxy: SuperClasico.

Soccer Saturday gameday: Sporting Kansas City at Galaxy

*Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. at Home Depot Center.

*KC DP Omar Bravo has not sufficiently recovered from hernia surgery and will not play.

*But David Beckham will and Phil Collin chats with the rested midfielder in the game preview.

*After beating Chivas USA in Carson on the opening day of the season is the last place team on the Eastern Conference sensing another road upset against a team having difficulty scoring and winless in its last three games?

Friday Football: Waiting for the weekend

*The Galaxy face Sporting Kansas City at 7:30 p.m. at Home Depot Center (live on FSN), while Chivas USA travel to New York to face the Red Bulls at 5 p.m. Sunday (Galavision). The latter game is also on tape-delay at 5 p.m. on Prime.

*Apparently the next player decision Chivas USA may have to make (they are top of the MLS allocation order, remember, after deciding to pass on Benny Feilhaber) is whether to grab injury-prone, aging (I know he’s only 28, but he’s been around forever without actually doing much it seems) and little-used DaMarcus Beasley, who is apparently exploring returning to MLS after lo these many years picking up big paychecks (and little else of note) in Europe. Personally, I’d say pass if I were Chivas USA – he’ll be expensive and his career has seemingly been on a downward spiral since the 2006 World Cup. Full details here.

*Incidentally, former Galaxy and Chivas USA player Alecko Eskandarian is apparently on the verge of returning to MLS in a coaching capacity.

*I’ll be honest: It’s one of those rare weekends where I’m looking forward to games on TV this weekend more than anything else.

Manchester United are likely to clinch the EPL title (their nineteenth) against Blackburn Rovers (4:30 a.m. Saturday ESPN2), while forthcoming Galaxy opponents Manchester City play Stoke City in the FA Cup at 7 a.m. Saturday on Fox Soccer Channel. Kinda sad to see the way the league is over-shadowing the tradition-filled cup, though.

if you are a United fan you’ll want to watch the game here, which is where local supporters will gather.

Then, in what should be a fascinating spectacle on TV, Pacific Northwest rivals Seattle and Portland collide at 8 p.m. Saturday on ESPN2. Actually, the most fascinating part may be watching the fans rather than the teams in a rivalry that has been stoked all week long.

*Lastly, the Castrol Index, as long-promised, has finally come to MLS.

The Galaxy’s best player:Omar Gonzalez, closely followed by Donovan Ricketts. David Beckham is supposedly only the fifth best Galaxy player (behind Mike Magee and Leonardo), while Landon Donovan is the 104th-ranked player in the league and Juan Pablo Angel 147th. Hmmm.

Chivas USA’s top-ranked player is Ben Zemanski.

Galaxy hosts England’s Manchester City July 24

The 1 p.m. game on Sunday, July 24 will thankfully be played at Home Depot Center against Manchester’s “other” club, the weekend after the Galaxy plays their previously-announced first game of the World Football Challenge against Real Madrid the weekend before.

“It was very important to our club to host an international friendly here at the Home Depot Center for our fans, especially those who come to this stadium week in and week out to support the Galaxy. We are very excited to welcome Manchester City, a team that is challenging for the FA Cup and that has just secured a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League,” Galaxy President Tom Payne said. “Our stadium offers fans the unique experience of feeling like you are right on top of the action. We all remember the amazing atmosphere inside the stadium two years ago for our match against AC Milan. We look forward to having the same type of crowd on July 24.”

It’s the third consecutive year the Galaxy host an international friendly in Carson. The Galaxy tied AC Milan 2-2 draw in 2009 and defeated Boca Juniors 1-0 there last season.

It’s bonus game 2 for Galaxy season ticket holders. Single ticket sale details have yet to be announced for everyone else, although three-game mini-plans that include two MLS games are on sale now.

This is the first game against EPL opposition for the Galaxy since 1997 when they tied 1-1 with Aston Villa. (Galaxy striker Juan Pablo Angel had yet to join Villa back then).

Incidentally, here’s how they played word of the game in Manchester.

Money bags City have not won a major trophy since 1976, but have suddenly become title contenders since being taken over by Sheikh Mansour of Abu Dhabi three years ago and sit fourth in the EPL. The club is now considered the 15th most valuable franchise in world soccer, with an estimated value of $291 million.

Managed by Italian Roberto Mancini, City’s stacked roster includes David Silva (Spain), England internationals Gareth Barry, Joe Hart and James Milner and former Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure

City play in the FA Cup final Saturday against Stoke City, a game that will be shown live at 7 a.m. on Fox Soccer Channel.

For more on the Blues, check out a feature-length film called “Blue Moon Rising,” which documents a year in the life of the club. It airs at 8 p.m. Friday on FSC.

Thursday Kicks: Chivas USA’s Mondaini learns punishment & more

*Chivas USA midfielder Marcos Mondaini learned today he will be suspended for a total of four games – so that’s three additional games in addition to the automatic one-game ban for being ejected – for his tackle last Saturday that left Real Salt Lake midfielder Javier Morales with two broken bones and torn ligaments in his left ankle.

The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee called Mondaini’s tackle “reckless and endangered the safety of his opponent.” He was also fined $1,500.

*Call it the selling of the Galaxy — to the students of Cal State Dominguez Hills.

*The Washington Post today seconded the report last week in the San Diego Union Tribune that Real Madrid will play CD Guadalajara July 20 at Qualcomm Stadium four days after the Spanish giants play the Galaxy at the Coliseum.

*Chivas USA has scheduled youth academy tryouts in the next couple of months in Bell Gardens and Simi Valley.

Final: Philadelphia Union-Galaxy

Philadelphia Union 1 Galaxy 1

i-0338319e0e67929103e686c7baa08f12-unionfan.jpgIt was one of those games (AP Photo).

* Game story.

*If you’re a Galaxy fan the most concerning part about this less than engaging road point wasn’t that the Galaxy (4-2-5) had one shot on target in the first 45 minutes (and the Union none) to take a 1-0 lead off a scuffed Landon Donovan shot.

It wasn’t the inept Sean Franklin attempt to pass back to goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts with just six minutes left in regulation that led to the Union equalizer.

And it wasn’t the fact that Real Salt Lake now lurk just two points behind the Western Conference-leading Galaxy, but have played around half as many games.

No, it was Juan Pablo Angel’s complete bumbling failure with an abysmal first touch about 10 minutes after halftime to score when perfectly set up by Juninho. And with the goal yawning.

That was an embarrassing moment as an aging pro. One that says hang ’em up. You are done.

The goal drought continues.

With apologies to Simon & Garfunkel: “Where have you gone Edson Buddle, a Galaxy fan base turns its lonely eyes to you (woo hoo hoo).”

Highlights:

Next for the Galaxy: 7:30 p.m. Saturday against Sporting Kansas City at Home Depot Center.

Footnote: Palos Verdes Estates’ Kyle Nakazawa needs to get it together in the Union midfield. An elegant playmaker with UCLA became clogger this evening with a couple of ungainly fouls and Nakazawa was deservedly subbed midway through the second half before further embarrassing himself. Gotta do better than that if you want to start in MLS.

Wednesday Galaxy gameday

4:30 p.m. Fox Sports West Philadelphia Union-Galaxy

i-2f79e6eff78d11d00a893748cffa6ef3-beckswedding.jpgWhat Galaxy officials say is an tiring schedule of first-class transatlantic flights and swanky weddings and cocktail parties games has taken it’s toll on the Galaxy’s David Beckham, seen here with the Mrs. playing out of position in Westminster Abbey recently (AP Photo).

*Phil Collin has the game basics.

*The Union have never beaten the Galaxy in their brief history and if they do so tonight it will be without Coach Peter Nowak.

*David Beckham is supposedly “resting” back home in LA perhaps because he’s planning another trip back to England. That Tuesday testimonial (a quaint English tradition started decades ago when players never made much money during their brief careers that’s now largely irrelevant given the money players make now) is sandwiched between the Chivas USA-Galaxy game Saturday, May 21 and a Wednesday game against Houston in Carson.

*Here are highlights and more from the earlier game this season between the Union and Galaxy.

FIFA corruption alleged over 2018 World Cup bid

i-bf39a202758578c5ec9900652450cabb-moneymen.jpgMoney men: FIFA President Sepp Blatter, left, and alleged would-be knight Nicolas Leoz, head of FIFA’s South American arm, are pictured last month chowing down at the global soccer trough at a lunch in Ypacaray, Paraguay (AFP file photos).

Shocking I know especially considering this recent pledge by the always honest, trustworthy and transparent FIFA president Sepp Blatter. Here’s the story from AP Sports Writer Rob Harris:

LONDON (AP) — Soccer’s governing body was hit with new corruption allegations Tuesday when six FIFA executive committee members were accused of receiving or demanding bribes during bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Issa Hayatou of Cameroon and Jacques Anouma of the Ivory Coast were allegedly paid $1.5 million to vote for Qatar, according to evidence submitted to a British parliamentary inquiry by The Sunday Times newspaper.

The Gulf nation beat the United States in the final round of voting in December for the 2022 tournament.

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee of the House of Commons also heard from the former head of England’s 2018 bid, who described the conduct of executive committee members Jack Warner, Nicolas Leoz, Ricardo Teixeira and Worawi Makudi in the 2018 contest as “improper and unethical.”

The parliamentary panel is looking into England’s failed bid for the World Cup as part of a wider inquiry into soccer governance.

In Zurich, FIFA President Sepp Blatter said he will ask for evidence that supports the claims and forward any allegations to the FIFA ethics committee.

“I cannot say they are all angels or they are all devils,” he said of the executive
members. “We must have the evidence and then we will act immediately against all those (who) would be breach of the ethical code rules,” Blatter added.

Referring to his bid for re-election next month against Mohammed bin Hammam of Qatar, Blatter said: “I’m fighting to clear FIFA, I’m fighting to clean FIFA.”

The bidding contest was rocked even before the vote when The Sunday Times published in October details of an undercover investigation that led to two of FIFA’s 24 executive committee members being suspended.

Amos Adamu of Nigeria was found guilty by FIFA’s ethics court of soliciting bribes from
undercover reporters, while Reynald Temarii of Tahiti was banned for breaching rules on confidentiality and loyalty.

The British newspaper sent further evidence — which it did not publish at the time for legal reasons — to the British committee on Monday to be made public using parliamentary privilege.

Two of the paper’s investigative journalists told the committee in a letter that a
whistleblower who had worked for the Qatari bid told them in December that the country “had paid $1.5 million to two FIFA ExCo members — Hayatou and Jacques Anouma of the Ivory Coast — to secure their votes.”

Reporters Jonathan Calvert and Claire Newell added that “a similar deal had been struck with Amos Adamu, although he was prevented from voting because he was suspended following our original article.”

Calvert and Newell said the whistleblower — who was not identified — told them the cash would go to the three members’ soccer federations, but “there would be no questions asked about how the money was used.”

“It was said in such a way that ‘We are giving it to you,'” they quoted the whistleblower as saying. “It was going to their federation. Basically, if they took it into their pocket, we
don’t give a jack.”

“The whisteblower’s allegations raise questions about the validity of Qatar’s wining bid,”
Calvert and Newell wrote. “Hayatou and Anouma are both reported to have voted for Qatar.”

While the reporters acknowledge the allegations are unproven, they wrote: “We believe they were credible because they were made by people who held or had held official positions in FIFA.”

Hayatou also has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 2001.

“The IOC takes all allegations of corruption very seriously and we would ask for any evidence of wrong doing to be passed to the IOC’s Ethics Commission,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams told The Associated Press.

Details of the alleged bribes were announced in the session by Member of Parliament Damian Collins as Englishman Mike Lee was answering questions about the World Cup bidding process. Lee worked on Qatar’s bid.

Lee, who also worked on the successful bids by London for the 2012 Olympics and Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Games, said he had no knowledge about the allegations being made by The Sunday Times. The Qatar 2022 team in Doha declined to comment on the allegations.

The session also heard from David Triesman, who resigned as chairman of England’s Football Association and its 2018 bid team last May — seven months before the vote — after being secretly recorded by a tabloid newspaper making unproven claims that Spain and Russia set up a bribery scam to influence referees at the 2010 World Cup.

Triesman — a member of the House of Lords — made the allegations about Warner, Leoz, Teixeira and Makudi to the committee.

i-28b76130ee4a515ff45c4ceaed9849f5-Jackwarner.jpgI am not a crook: CONCACAF President Jack Warner speaks in South America recently.

He claimed that Warner, a FIFA vice president and CONCACAF president from Trinidad and Tobago, asked for money — suggested to be about $4.1 million — to build an education center in Trinidad and for about $820,000 to buy Haiti’s World Cup TV rights.

“I have never asked Triesman nor any other person, Englishman or otherwise, for any money for my vote at any time,” Warner said in a statement to British TV channel Sky Sports News.

Triesman also said that Leoz, of Paraguay, asked for an honorary knighthood, while Makudi of Thailand allegedly wanted to receive money from English TV for them to broadcast a planned friendly against the country.

Triesman claimed that Teixeira, a Brazilian, asked him to “come and tell me what you have got for me.”

“These were some of the things that were put to me personally, sometimes in the presence of others, which in my view did not represent proper and ethical behavior on the part of members of the executive committee,” Triesman said.

The British government responded to the allegations by calling on FIFA to look at how the IOC adopted strict rules following the Salt Lake City bidding scandal in 1999. Ten IOC members resigned or were expelled in the affair.

“The International Olympic Committee had to face up to big challenges after the award of the Olympics to Salt Lake City and they took serious action and restored confidence in their processes,” said Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who oversees sport in Britain. “FIFA needs to do the same.”

AP Sports Writer Graham Dunbar in Zurich contributed to this story.

Tuesday’s column (& more): MLS by the numbers

i-099b67e421eb4994c3c60a31c673c458-henrydribble.jpgMoney mismatch: Red Bulls’ $5.6 million man Thierry Henry takes on the Galaxy’s $197,000 a year defender Omar Gonzalez in Saturday’s encounter at Home Depot Center (AP Photo).

*Salary numbers that is. MLS wage figures were released over the weekend and while some reporters busied themselves fiddling with spreadsheets and calculating expenditures by team and median salaries I tried a less statistical (but hopefully readable) take on the data in today’s column.

*To no-one’s surprise Home Depot Center was named today to host MLS Cup 2011, the fourth time the championship game has been held in Carson. The game will kick off at 6 p.m. Nov. 20 live on ESPN and Galavision.

“We are proud and excited to bring Major League Soccer’s championship event back to the City of Los Angeles and The Home Depot Center, one of the finest sports venues in the United States,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. “MLS Cup has grown into a four-day celebration of the world’s game in North America. We believe that Los Angeles and The Home Depot Center will be a superb stage for MLS Cup 2011.”

Galaxy and HDC owner Anschutz Entertainment Group had lobbied hard to bring the game back to Southern California for the first time since 2008 when the Columbus Crew beat New York, 3-1.

“Los Angeles is very familiar with hosting major events and this championship game is going to be embraced by the entire city,” Galaxy President Tom Payne said. “We would like nothing more than to be playing in MLS Cup 2011 at home in front of our fans.”

No kidding. Sadly, last time the event was held here without the Galaxy playing the South Bay (let alone the city in general) barely noticed. Let’s hope that’s a little different this time around.

*In Galaxy-related news today, Philadelphia Union striker Carlos Ruiz rips his former team ahead of Wednesday’s game between the two while New York striker Luke Rodgers rips mouthy Landon Donovan.

Love it. Just don’t see this sort of thing very often in the too polite MLS. And, of course, there’s just enough grains of truth in what both Ruiz and Rodgers said, which is always guaranteed to start a healthy argument or three.

*Finally, the Chivas USA reserves lost 3-2 in Seattle last night against their Sounders counterparts. Trialist Chris Cortez got both goals for the visitors on either side of halftime.

Michael Lahoud, who hasn’t played since sustaining a concussion last month at San Jose, started for Chivas USA and went the full 90 minutes.

Chivas USA XI: 30-Sergio Arias; 24-Bryan de la Fuente, 38-Ian Hines-Ike, 4-Michael Umaa, 11-Michael Lahoud; 36-Chris Rodriguez, 6- Francisco Mendoza, 8- Mariano Trujillo, 14-Gerson Mayen; 27-Chris Cortez, 99-Victor Estupinan

Updated 9 a.m.

United Soccer Leagues announced this morning it has punted the three Puerto Rican teams from USL Pro.

All three teams were in the same division as the LA Blues, a weird geographical grouping that made as much sense as a team with LA in its name playing most of its games in Orange County.
