Happy Independence Day.

Another Fourth of July in Southern California and another Galaxy game followed by the traditional fireworks show that is usually among the region’s biggest. Expect, as usual, a correspondingly large crowd to the game and the area surrounding Home Depot Center as many residents set up deckchairs and barbecues in nearby parks and await the free show.

This year a full contingent of 250 Sounders fans are enjoying the weekend in Southern California, while the LA Riot Squad marks its 10th anniversary with a bash starting at 2 p.m. at the stadium that includes food, free beer courtesy of the Galaxy, entertainment, a five-a-side soccer tournament and more. Full details on their Facebook page.

While the game is an event off the field it’s big on it, too, with just four points separating the two teams in the Western Conference standings:

*Staff Writer Phil Collin has a preview.

*Here are some quotes from Seattle Coach Sigi Schmid and others from a Sounders perspective.

It’s the second consecutive year the Sounders are the visitors (apparently taking over from former perennial and apt Independence Day opponents the New England Revolution).

Last year’s game featured the return of Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle from World Cup duty, a trademark Juninho rocket and a memorable Galaxy win. Relive it here.

Enjoy the holiday and check back here tonight where I’ll be live blogging the game.
