Live: Toronto FC (6-12-12) at Chivas USA (7-12-11) from Home Depot Center

Final: Chivas USA 3 Toronto 0

Win number eight for Chivas USA on the year equals their number of victories from last season – with three games remaining in the regular season.

More importantly, Chivas USA remain in their unlikely playoff hunt by picking up three valuable points, but are still out of the wild card spots.

This was Chivas USA’s first shutout win since beating Houston 3-0 July 23 and their first win in eight games.

More later.

*********************************

Toronto are in tatters, their season over.

Juan Pablo Angel added his second and Chivas USA’s third in the 77th minute, Ben Zemanski running from within his own half at a back-pedaling Toronto defense and passing the ball to Angel. He turned Andy Iro at the edge of the box and shot a bullet past Stefan Frei, who had no chance.

**************************

How happy are these loyal Chivas USA fans that their team appears on track for a first win since August 6? All 14,357 of them are doing the wave.

*************************

Justin Braun scored a second for Chivas USA in the 71st minute, getting on the end of a Michael Umana cross and beating Ashtone Morgan to the ball with a header from six yards out that beat Stefan Frei.

************************

Toronto’s Ashtone Morgan tried to gift Juan Pablo Angel with a second goal in the 63rd minute, a poor attempt at a clearance on the edge of the box popping up straight to the former Galaxy striker, who hurried his shot unnecessarily and aimed the ball straight at Stefan Frei.

Marcos Mondaini replaced Laurent Courtois in the 64th minute for Chivas USA.

***************************

A defensive error by David Junior Lopes should have been punished with an equalizing goal in the 55th minute, but Danny Koervermans wastefully shot straight at Dan Kennedy.

**********************************

Toronto’s players were apparently put on notice by their coach to shoot on sight at the break, defender Richard Eckersley crashing a 35-yard effort off of Dan Kennedy’s crossbar just three minutes into the second half.

************************************

Toronto midfielder Terry Dunfield entered the game at the half, replacing Julian de Guzman.

*************************

A rather dire 45 minutes from Toronto who conceded plenty of time and space to Chivas USA in their own half and would have been punished more by a better team.

Still, they made Chivas USA look pretty good, allowing six shots while taking just one – a 26th minute effort by Ryan Johnson that forced a save from goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

Former French second division player Laurent Courtois has looked fairly lively up the left wing and playmaker Nick LaBrocca was regarded warily by Toronto’s defense every time he advanced with the ball out of midfield.

All in all this was not exactly flowing stuff, but at this stage of the season results are all that matter for Chivas USA.

*****************************************

Juan Pablo Angel scored his fifth goal in six games for Chivas USA in the 12th minute, heading home an Ante Jazic cross from seven yards after Justin Braun picked up a loose ball in the Toronto half.

*************************

It took me just 30 minutes to get from my Torrance driveway to my press box seat tonight at Home Depot Center where a rather subdued atmosphere has greeted two struggling teams.

There are three changes tonight for Chivas USA: Andrew Boyens replaces Heath Pearce (hamstring) in defense, Justin Braun is favored over Jorge Flores in midfield and Frenchman Laurent Courtois is preferred over Marcos Mondaini. Both Flores and Courtois drop to the bench.

Chivas USA XI: Dan Kennedy-Michael Umana, Andrew Boyens, David Junior Lopes, Ante Jazic-Justin Braun, Nick LaBrocca, Ben Zemanski, Laurent Courtois-Juan Pablo Angel, Alejandro Moreno.

Toronto XI: Stefan Frei-Richard Eckersley, Ty Harden, Andy Iro, Ashtone Morgan-Julian de Guzman, Eric Avila, Torsten Frings-Nick Soolsma, Danny Koevermans, Ryan Johnson.

Galaxy steal a win in Columbus

Columbus Crew 0 Galaxy 1

No David Beckham. No Robbie Keane. No Landon Donovan (until the second half). And no goals until second half stoppage time when the Galaxy stole the victory at the death of a not particularly noteworthy game.

A Donovan shot was parried by Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer into the path of Chad Barrett who snapped up the chance to give the Galaxy three unexpected points after a long road trip.

Michael Stephens cleared a Crew chance off the goal line earlier in the game.

The Galaxy are comfortably coasting toward a second successive Supporters Shield.

Soccer Saturday: MLS and Chivas USA supports Goals for St. Jude Week & more

i-1d9cbdc67a6389c54c9ca2ee6e610808-smalljudesgrp.jpgChicago Fire midfielder Logan Pause, New York Red Bull midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy, former Chivas USA defender Jason Hernandez and current Chivas USA utility man Michael Lahoud with St. Jude patient Sidney.

Chivas USA will mark Goals for St. Jude Week tonight at its home game against Toronto at Home Depot Center.

Chivas USA, struggling for wins and a playoff spot, face a Canadian team that could be eliminated from the playoff hunt themselves tonight.

Toronto has never secured so much as a point against Chivas USA.

Here’s today’s public service announcement via the hospital:

St. Jude is the first and only pediatric cancer center to be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute.

Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world.

St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization.

And if that isn’t reason enough to support this institution, I don’t know what is.

Here’s more on Goals for St. Jude night:

Chivas USA asks fans to help kick cancer and support St. Jude. During the night, a video about Goals for St. Jude will air in the arena and St, Jude patients from the LA area will have a meet and greet with Goals for St. Jude ambassador Michael Lahoud and other Chivas USA players.

Friday Football: Waiting for the weekend

i-a9f47a00c9749f17716ae8019bb51d27-boxxcanada.jpgU.S. holding midfielder Shannon Boxx of Torrance shadows Canada’s Kelly Parker Thursday in Portland (AP Photo).

*Hermosa Beach resident Abby Wambach paced the U.S. with a brace as the Americans beat Canada 3-0 Thursday in the second of two-game post-World Cup series between the two nations. The game drew 18,570 in soccer-crazy Portland, the largest crowd to watch the U.S. women on American soil since the days of Mia Hamm.

*The Galaxy visits the Crew on Saturday (4:30 p.m. live on FSN) where two of the top three scorers in the league will be on display.

Incidentally, the Galaxy will begin selling discounted two-game playoff packages at 10 a.m. Monday. Packages start at $42 for the home leg of their conference semifinal series as well as a potential conference championship game.

*Hapless Chivas USA, their playoff hopes fading fast, are at home against Toronto (who have a modest two-game win streak going) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Home Depot Center (live on KDOC and KWHY). The best reason to watch the game may well be to get a first-hand peek at Toronto’s two designated players who joined the club in July, Dutch striker Danny Koevermans, who has six goals in seven games, and German midfielder Torsten Frings, (he of the missed goal line handball in the 2002 World Cup that contributed to the American exit from the competition).

Will this be more enjoyable viewing for Chivas USA fans? The Chivagirls are on the ABC show “Everyday Health” at 11 a.m. Saturday.

*Games on TV this weekend include three Saturday EPL match-ups involving Manchester City (against Everton at 4:30 a.m. on ESPN2), Arsenal (against Bolton at 7 a.m. on Fox Soccer) and Manchester United (against Stoke at 9:30 a.m. on Fox Soccer).

BTW, last Sunday’s first of three taped-delayed Barclays English Premier League matches this season on Fox – Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat of Chelsea – was the most watched EPL match ever in the U.S., with a combined audience of 2.4 million viewers on a trio of Fox channels.

Other games include Sporting Kansas City-Philadelphia Union at 5:30 tonight on Fox Soccer and modest Tijuana visiting mighty Club America at 2 p.m. Sunday on KMEX. Click at top right for a schedule of all the games.

Galaxy CONCACAF CL Video highlights

Game story.

Watch:

Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena had regarded a result from this game as “critical” so this loss – the second straight for the Galaxy after racking up consecutive wins to open Champions League play – must be considered a major setback. If Morelia defeats winless Motagua as expected tonight the Galaxy must play catch-up – and will need a win to keep pace when Morelia visits Carson Sept. 28.

The pressure just cranked up a notch on the Galaxy’s CL campaign.

Wednesday MLS & CONCACAF CL Gameday

It’s rare when both the Galaxy and Chivas USA are in action on the same day during the week in different competitions.

But that’s the case today when Chivas USA meets D.C. United at 4:30 p.m. (live on Prime and KWHY) in MLS action and the Galaxy are in Costa Rica for their fourth CONCACAF Champions League group game against Alajuelense (live at 7 p.m. on Fox Soccer and Galavision).

Staff Writer Phil Collin has brief looks at both games

Chivas USA haven’t won since May, are mired in a four-game losing streak and are coming off their heaviest defeat of the season. More gory details here.

*For the Galaxy, the crowd and the playing surface will be as much of a challenge as their opponents.

Tuesday’s Column: Galaxy’s Keane makes himself at home in LA

i-7c77b059068971b21e99781573544b60-keanecapsgoal.jpgEye on the prize: Robbie Keane scores Saturday against Vancouver for his third goal in four starts since joining the Galaxy (Getty Images).

And it didn’t take him long to get comfortable.

I spoke with Robbie Keane Monday at Home Depot Center – between bouts of his bantering with fellow Brit Chris Birchall – after his just what the doctor ordered start to his Galaxy career.

Fans will be happiest if he does most of his talking on the field.

Chicago Fire-Chivas USA video highlights

Chicago Fire 3 Chivas USA 2

Watch:

After last week’s loss Chivas USA Coach Robin Fraser said the performance and result was as bad as it gets.

This was worse. As in soul-destroying. Crushing. Season-throttling.

It was brutal to watch.

Chivas USA clawed back a two-goal deficit with a pair of goals within three minutes against a 10-man opponent only to yield the winner five minutes from the end of regulation time.

Juan Pablo Angel finally had not one, but two goals – one at each end.

Chivas USA are running out of games.

Quotable:

I thought we had moments today that were quite good but we had moments that were horrible as well,” said Fraser. “Good teams don’t have horrible moments. Good teams have great moments, good moments, and maybe fair moments. But good teams don’t have horrible moments.”

Galaxy-Vancouver Whitecaps video highlights

If, like me, you attempted to record the telecast of the delayed game on your DVR and were screwed by Fox switching channels and times (that’s the sort of care and attention a league/sport gets when a network loses the rights to that property the next year, I guess) these YouTube highlights might be as close as you get to seeing anything.

Staff Writer PHil Collin has the game story

Watch:

Looked like another dominating Galaxy win though.

Robbie Keane continued to make fans forget all about the brief Juan Pablo Angel era, Temple City’s Bryan Jordan became the latest unheralded squad player to have his moment in the spotlight and the growing cult-like status of Mike Magee added another chapter.
