Galaxy’s Donovan to return to Everton on loan

Liverpool bound: The Galaxy’s Landon Donovan celebrates returning to Everton – well, OK winning the MLS Cup – but it sounds like he’s happy to return to the cash-strapped club for a couple of months. Are you Galaxy fans? (AP Photo).

Landon Donovan missed several games through injury at the tail end of last season because he needed the rest after he was hobbled by injuries and missed several U.S. games for similar reasons as well, but that hasn’t stopped him accepting a two-month loan back to England’s Everton, the Galaxy announced today.

It’s the second time in three years he will have played for the club after passing up the opportunity in the 2010-2011 MLS offseason to rest following the World Cup.

“The opportunity to return to Everton and play for such a well-respected club and a manager that I hold in such high regard was something that was simply too good to pass up. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Everton in 2010 and I’m hopeful that we can experience similar success this time around,” Donovan said. “I want to thank David Moyes and Bruce Arena, as well as executives from both clubs and Major League Soccer for allowing me this unique and special opportunity.”

Donovan will be eligible to make his season debut for Everton on Jan. 4 when the club hosts Bolton Wanderers at Goodison Park. He will remain with the club through the Merseyside derby against Liverpool at Anfield on Feb. 25. Here’s the club’s schedule.

“This is a great opportunity for Landon,” Galaxy General Manager and Head Coach Bruce Arena was quoted by the club as saying. “During the final months of the 2011 season he was limited because of an ongoing injury and he just started to get his legs back during the playoffs. Therefore, I think that this opportunity with Everton comes at a perfect time as he is rested and ready to go.”

Everton are scheduled to lose this weekend against resurgent Norwich City (says the biased City fan).

What do you think? Shouldn’t he be resting given the early Galaxy start to the season? Or should he just stay match fit at this stage of his career so he is ready to go right away in the early CONCACAF Champions League games.

Take the poll:

Should Landon Donovan go on loan to Everton?
Yes, it will keep him fresh for the early Galaxy start to the 2012 season.
No, he needs to rest.
I don’t care. I’m a bigger Chivas USA fan than I am of Landycakes.

Congrats to Landon. It’ll be great to see him test himself against some excellent EPL teams: Tottenham, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City.

I am not surprised that they were able to work a loan out, as there was likely enough in it for MLS to accede to letting Landon go for the offseason. No doubt the league and probably the Galaxy jacked up the price on the end-of-loan buyout to astonomical levels, though.

Best of luck to you Landon!

    He’ll score a hat-trick against your budgies. 😉

Meh. If the Everton work tunes him up and doesn’t injure him or wear him out, it will be worth it. If not, not.

Donovan himself said in late-season interviews that he’s starting to feel the accumulation of years playing a very physical sport, and that he’s starting to adjust his game to lengthen his productive career. He can’t play year-round much longer without risking career-shortening wear and tear.

I’m greedy. I want at least five more years with him on the Galaxy. Maybe another CONCACAF cup for the team, some Supporters Shields, a couple more MLS Cups…

Donovan should have followed Keane’s lead and stayed put this off season to fully rejuvenate himself. Early CCL games, earlier league play, WC qualifying and next year’s CCL games will be very taxing on any “body” including a super fit Donovan. The only way I can see him thriving next year will be for him to play as a forward for LA the entire season. We know Everton is going to run him into the ground playing in midfield but he cannot do that back here for a full season.

I think a case can be made that he should rest and rejuvenate his aging body, but I trust Landon to take care of himself physically. He has done a good job taken care of himself in the past and didn’t go out on loan last year so he could rest. So if Landon feels he can play then he should. Now go rip up the EPL!

Donovan is embarking on a Beckham like 5 year run. Good luck to us all.

Edson Buddle has been left off Ingolstadt’s roster, have you heard anything about him coming back to the Galaxy?

  • Studs

I haven’t but LA should have the right for first refusal on him.

Is the blog down or updates scarce due to the holidays?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you: short answer is no.
