If you figure that we lost Juninho and likely Birchall from the central midfield crew last year and there is a good chance we will lose Beckham and possibly Stephens for an extended period of time due to the Olympics, I could see the interest in getting a skilled player like Nakazawa to provide more depth for all of the competitions we will be in this year. Otherwise, when those players are gone you are likely left with Sarvas, who is new to the league, Cardozo, and perhaps players like Keat, who barely played last year, and the rookie second round pick Williams. Given that Nakazawa reportedly only made $44K last year and they know him well from his UCLA days, it’s pretty cheap depth. The bigger cost would be if they gave up an international slot to get him, but if Birchall is gone and they don’t think Keat is good enough to stick with the team, then that may not be a problem this year.
