Beckham and Donovan skip Tuesday’s Spurs match for MLS All-Star Game

If you bought tickets to Tuesday’s Galaxy-Tottenham Hotspur game in part to see David Beckham and Landon Donovan take on EPL opposition, you’re out of luck.

Despite using Donovan’s pic to sell tickets to that game (the ad above remains on the Galaxy’s website as of this writing) the pair will miss the friendly to participate in Wednesday’s MLS All-Star Game at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.

“Beckham and Donovan were voted to the MLS All-Star First XI on July 8 and were confirmed for head coach Ben Olsen’s 18-man Gameday roster a week later,” the Galaxy said in a statement released this morning.

Funny how they didn’t tell fans that at the same time, before they bought their expensive tickets.

Isn’t bait and switch advertising illegal?

I’ll have much more to say about this in Tuesday’s column.

if anybody shows up to see the Galaxy players only because they are playing the Spurs then they need to get ripped off to the maximum. and if they don’t care about the Galaxy then who cares how much these idiots paid for their tickets. it’s idiotic to pay to see these scrimmage games, i sold my tickets way before like many others, ditto for the Read Madrid game.

This is pretty much the “last straw” for me and the GALAXY, and I won’t be purchasing tickets to *any* of their future events. Ive had issues with them before over their loaning out players till just before the regular season starts, but this one really takes the take.

I was kind of maybe expecting Beckham might not play because of his role in the Olympics, but withholding Donovan just shows how little regard the GALAXY & AEG have for their fans.

They knew the date of the All-Star game long before they booked this match, so they should’ve taken into consideration that Donovan (and perhaps Beckham…) would be “locks” to play in that game. And has Nick pointed out, to promote the match using their pictures is just plain dishonest and false advertising.

And to the first poster, “No”, fans don’t serve to be “ripped off” and duped by the GALAXY. Not every fan has the knowledge or the foresight to predict a disgusting move like this. Just like me, they bought their tickets in good faith, expecting to see the team’s stars. The only thing that should’ve precluded their appearance would be some type of injury, not an outside commitment to rest them for the MLS All-Star Game.

I will un-subscribe myself from any future GALAXY e-mails and just to make myself feel better, I’ll even eat somewhere else before the match instead of supporting their concession stands.

Nick, AEG doing something “illegal”? How quaint… ;)

I’m with you, I’ll go to see Spurs, but was looking forward to seeing Donovan and perhaps Beckham as well. Never again, fool me once….
