Galaxy trade reserve goalkeeper Gaudette to Red Bulls, sign UCLA product Rowe

The Galaxy announced today the club had sent goalkeeper Bill Gaudette to the New York Red Bulls in exchange for the club’s second round pick in the 2014 MLS Supplemental Draft.

In his place the Galaxy signed UCLA product Brian Rowe, 23, an MLS Pool goalkeeper.

Rowe was selected by Chivas USA in the second round of the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft before signing a contact as a MLS pool goalkeeper assigned to teams as in emergency situations as needed.

The Eugene, Ore., native briefly trained with the Galaxy in May, serving as a backup goalkeeper in two MLS games and appearing in several reserve games.

Formerly with the Columbus Crew, Gaudette, 30, played in three regular season games after signing in February in the wake of a preseason trial with the club. The Galaxy had an 0-2-1 record with Gaudette between the posts, while he compiled a 1.33 goals against average.

“Bill is an experienced goalkeeper in American soccer and MLS,” said Red Bulls General Manager and Sporting Director Erik Soler. “He will provide quality competition and guidance for our two young goalkeepers and we are excited to bring him to New York.”

The Galaxy play the Timbers in Portland Saturday in a nationally televised 8 p.m. game. on the NBC Sports Network.

Beckham heading to Olympics in non-playing role, but backs off lighting flame

Flame out: Beckham already accompanied the Olympic flame from Greece to England, but said he won’t carry it at the opening ceremony (AP Photo).

No word on how much time he will miss for the Galaxy this time:

LOS ANGELES (AP) — David Beckham doesn’t believe he is the right person to light the flame in the opening ceremony of his hometown London Olympics.

“Lighting the torch in the stadium is something that should be done by an Olympian, an Olympian that has done incredible things for our country and has won gold medals,” Beckham said Thursday at Galaxy.

Beckham helped London’s successful bid to win the games and was disappointed to miss out on Britain’s soccer team but said he will have an undisclosed role to play during the Olympics.

“It is yet to be decided, but I will be part of it in some ways,” Beckham said. “I have been
speaking to Seb Coe and a couple of other people about what it is I am going to be doing.”

With more than 100 games for England, Beckham was heartbroken to be left off of the Britain Olympic squad but had kind words for his former Manchester United teammate Ryan Giggs, who will captain the team.

“Ryan has had such an amazing career with Manchester United … he deserves to be there, and it would have been great to be there with him,” Beckham said. “We have a lot of great memories with Manchester United. I have moved on and am getting on with things now and I hope the GB team wins as many medals as possible.”

The 37-year-old Beckham, who grew up in London, can’t wait for the games to begin in two weeks.

“I am going to be just proud to be there as a fan more so than anything,” he said. “In a part of London where I grew up, and I used to play over the soccer fields that have now been changed, and as an Englishman, I am going to be very proud.”

Meanwhile, in the same interview Beckham also lashed out at his critics and took a few shots from his glass house at those that have the temerity to question his absences from MLS.

Torrance’s Schmid seeks to make U.S. Open Cup history with Sounders

Former Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid, who grew up in Torrance, is aiming for a record fourth consecutive U.S. Open Cup after the Sounders defeated Chivas USA Wednesday in a semifinal that was closer than the 4-1 scoreline suggested.

Here’s the view from Seattle.

The first half was very even,” said Chivas USA defender James Riley, who formerly played with the Sounders. “We were very unfortunate to give up that goal to Eddie [Johnson]. Eddie on a breakaway is exactly what we were trying to prevent, but our lines were a little off and he finishes so well that he was able to put it in. To go down one nil at the half is very unfortunate, because we really wanted to go in tied. Then when they got a goal one minute into the second half, it was obviously a dagger. It was difficult to come back against a quality team like that, especially at Starfire. We had an uphill battle. We got it to two to one, and obviously at two to one we thought we had a chance to equalize because it is the hardest lead to defend in soccer. We thought we could have had it, but they won the critical moments on offense and defense tonight.”

Five years of Designated Players in MLS

61130-beckhamwave.jpg

Value for money? David Beckham was the first MLS DP five years ago, but most MLS clubs have gone after a very different sort of designated player (AP Photo).

When David Beckham joined the Galaxy in 2007, ushering in the designated player era in MLS, it was assumed he was the prototype for those sorts of players.

But five years on, most designated players in the league are quite different from Beckham.

I explore why in this week’s column

Sunday Soccer: Galaxy at Fire

The coolest Chicago day in about two weeks greets the Galaxy today in a noon ESPN matchup against the Fire.

With Robbie Keane apparently planning a 33rd birthday celebration in Vegas after the game judging by his wife’s Twitter chatter, he will want something extra to celebrate and the cooler weather should give the Galaxy a better chance of arresting a two-game losing skid and climbing above Chivas USA in the standings.

This is the third game in 10 days for the Fire who are on something of a roll, club officials noted:

Currently in the midst of a four game unbeaten streak, the Fire’s record at home to start the 2012 MLS season (5-1-2; 17 points) is the best through eight matches since the Fire moved to Toyota Park in 2006 and is tied for the second best home start in club history with 2001 and 2003.

Not what the struggling Galaxy needs.

Bad boy Beckham is out, but perhaps more importantly defender Omar Gonzalez has returned to provide defensive stability in front of what will be an expectant capacity crowd.

Final: Chivas USA 0 Vancouver Whitecaps 0

This was an excruciating game to watch for about 70 minutes.

As in deathly, tediously inexorably, dull. And in no way urgent.

Staff Writer Phil Collin has the game story.

Notable: Chivas USA are unbeaten in seven of the last eight matches.

Quotable:

“I thought we were probably a little too passive in the beginning of the game, not urgent enough,” Chivas USA coach Robin Fraser said. “First half I thought things were a little bit too slow, we didn’t move the ball quickly enough, we didn’t make it difficult for them at all. I felt in the second half our urgency was much better.

“Certainly the second half of the second half I thought it was very good. … More than anything we just come out of it as a group realizing that we have to [be urgent]. The urgency that we saw in the second half is what we need to see more of.

“The difference in our team when we play with urgency versus when we play with less urgency, it’s a stark difference. At the end of the day we have to do things better to win games, certainly a big part of that for us is just our approach and again, our urgency. I think we have quality players and in this league so many games are won really based on how urgently you approach a game. When you look at a lot of the teams that have been successful in this league over the years, it is a lot about concentration, focus, and urgency.”

Got that?
