Saturday Soccer: LA Galaxy at Vancouver Whitecaps & more

    • The Galaxy face the recently verbally assaulted Whitecaps in Vancouver (4 p.m. TWC) and could have key players back. Do you remember last year’s game in the Canadian city? Inglewood’s Jose Villarreal does.
    • There’s little doubt Chivas USA need reinforcements. But do they need them in the form of yet another young (20) player on loan from CD Guadalajara?
    • However, Peruvian defender Walter Vílchez, who started Chivas USA’s first two games of the season before suffering a knee injury, has returned to full training and could be available for Sunday’s road game against the Timbers in Portland, according to the club.
    • One who won’t play in the game is Chivas USA midfielder Carlos Alvarez, suspended by MLS for two games and fined an undisclosed amount for violent conduct during last weekend’s game  against Sporting Kansas City for kicking the ball at an opponent’s head. He will miss Sunday’s game in Portland and the May 19 game against Real Salt Lake.

Thursday Kicks: FA Cup, Chivas USA & More

  • Faltering Chivas USA will meet a Timbers team Sunday in Portland (live at 2 p.m. on Unimas) that extended the club’s unbeaten streak to eight games, their best ever MLS stretch in the club’s short history, after drawing 1-1 Wednesday night with FC Dallas.
  • Chivas USA midfielder Oswaldo Minda, 30, out for the last five weeks with a “complicated” quad strain, could be available for the game:

“I’ve gotten a lot better,” he said. “It’s a long process because we’re talking about a tear in a muscle where I put most of my weight on, which takes a much longer recovery than any other muscle injury. The important thing is that, thankfully, I’m recovering and I’m hoping to be back helping the team real soon.”

  • For the first time in the 150-year history of the FA Cup, Saturday’s final will be shown on a major U.S. network, airing live at 9 a.m. on Fox. Relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic faces last year’s EPL champion Manchester City, while Gus Johnson and Ian Wright have the call.
  • Also this weekend, MLS Live will offfer seven games in a free trial.

Late Tuesday Kicks: Violence, NFL & More

  1. MLS has suspended Sporting Kansas City midfielder Paulo Nagamura for one game and fined him an undisclosed amount for violent conduct after he “demonstrated disregard for his opponent’s safety” by stepping on (Edgar) Mejía’s hand in the 52nd minute of their game last weekend against Chivas USA.
  2. The minor league LA Blues announced today they have signed former NFL punter and Bruin Aaron Perez as a goalkeeper for the remainder of the 2013 season. Perez, who had stints with the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins, most recently played for FC Santa Clarita of the National Premier Soccer League.
  3. Agoura Hills-based FC Hasental of the National Premier Soccer League played the role of U.S. Open Cup giantkillers Tuesday knocking off the Fresno Fuego Future 5-3 in a play-in U.S. Open Cup game. Next: the Ventura County Fusion Tuesday at Ventura College.

Chivas USA Trades Striker Juan Agudelo to the New England Revolution

Chivas USA’s best forward, 20-year-old Juan Aguedelo, was traded today to New England for allocation money in a move one Revs official described as “no-brainer,” but left hard-core Chivas fans — and that’s all the club has left  — wondering whether the franchise had collectively got any semblance of a soccer mind remaining at all.

Agudelo lasted less than a year in Southern California, scoring five goals and adding four assists in 26 appearances for Chivas USA following his May 17, 2012 trade from the New York Red Bulls.

The U.S. international, regarded as a star of the future, scored on his national team debut and is in his fourth MLS season.

Chivas USA offered no reason for the trade in a brief announcement.

Here’s one Chivas USA fans’ reaction in the wake of the signing of goalkeeper Dan Kennedy last week to a new contract:

Weekly Soccer Column: MLS Officiating, Landon Donovan on the spot & MLS Player Salaries Released

Read the column here.

And, as a follow-up, the Professional Referees Organization analyzes the two calls discussed in the column  — and the differences between them — here.

Meanwhile, the MLS Players Union has released its annual salary survey for the year.

Among the findings: Chivas USA is paying Canadian defender Ante Jazic more than $132,000 this year NOT to play, while goalkeeper Dan Kennedy’s new contract makes him the club’s highest paid player at $192,000 annually.

How much can a young American player expect to get paid with the Galaxy?

Well, Charlie Rugg is collecting a little over $35,000 this year, Inglewood’s Joseph Villarreal is on $48,000, Jack McBean gets double that ($101,000) while Hawthorne’s Gyasi Zardes tops them all with $173,000.

The Galaxy’s Robbie Keane is MLS’ top earner ($4.3 million), while Landon Donovan is fourth on that list at $2.5 million.

The complete MLS list is here.

*San Jose Earthquakes forward Steven Lenhart was suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount by MLS today for his conduct in the above incident that “endangered the safety” of opponent Mario de Luna in the 68th minute of the game against Chivas USA Saturday in Carson.

Lenhart won’t appeal the suspension. He wasn’t give a card of any color for the incident in the game, but coach Frank Yallop yanked the hot-headed Lenhart two minutes later to ensure he didn’t get sent off.

*Torrance’s Shannon Box is out for six weeks after undergoing surgery today.

*Those Frank Lampard to the Galaxy rumors? Not going to happen this summer, according to this report out of England.
