Chivas USA dump four players including Laurent Courtois

chivasusaIn an apparent money-saving move, Chivas USA dumped four players Sunday night including French midfielder Laurent Courtois, the day after he provided the equalizer against New England to stop a club record seven-game losing streak.

Also cut by new coach Jose Luis Real, who clearly has not liked what he’s seen so far in his trio of games in charge so far, were 23-year-old Ecuadorian Miller Bolanos, widely considered  among the club’s top players, defender Joaquin Velazquez and 19-year-old midfielder Giovani Casillas, who was sent back to CD Guadalajara.

Waiving players with semi-guaranteed contracts before July 1 frees up salary cap space.

Courtois was scheduled to make $132,000, Velazquez $100,000, Casillas $93,000 and  Bolanos $54,000 this year

But Courtois and Bolanos, whose options were declined, appeared in just five games this season, while Casillas made just two starts. Velazquez started in all 12 Chivas USA MLS games this season on the 3-10-3 squad.
