MLS: Chivas USA not leaving Los Angeles, despite marketing failure

Word Wednesday that MLS will expand to 24 teams, naturally prompted speculation that struggling Chivas USA could move from Los Angeles, an idea Commissioner Don Garber quickly moved to scuttle during the half time show of the MLS All-Star Game.

“There is no plan whatsoever to move any clubs,” he said flatly after addressing the failed effort at branding the club after its Mexican mothership.

“Every league is going to have clubs that are at the top … and every league is going to have clubs that are at the bottom and Chivas USA is an example of that,” Garber said. “This was an idea to create a Hispanic brand connected with (CD) Guadalajara and that idea hasn’t worked. We’ve got to find ways to work with (co-owners) Jorge Vergara and his wife and figure out a solution.”

What Garber didn’t say is that he said some months ago that if Chivas USA’s marketing efforts didn’t show some signs of life by July the league would act.

Well, it’s now August, Chivas USA continues to be a disaster on and off the field and MLS has done zilch.
