Landon Donovan wasn’t the only veteran to impress at the Gold Cup.

In the clearest indication yet that quietly unspectacular veteran goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini is on the outs with Galaxy coach Bruce Arena, the club announced today that they have signed 31-year-old goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, who helped his country reach the final of the tournament.

Penedo, who has played in Italy and Spain for Cagliari and Ossauna respectively, conceded just four Gold Cup goals and was named the best goalkeeper in the tournament. He has spent the last six seasons with Guatemalan club Municipal and joins the Galaxy on a free transfer.

“He’ll help strengthen the goal position for us,” Arena said in a statement released by the club.

Penedo, who has made 89 appearances for Panama, could make his Galaxy debut Wednesday against AC Milan in Miami in the Guinness International Champions Cup (3:30 p.m. live on Fox Soccer).

Former EPL goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, who makes $150,000 a year, has made several crucial errors that have cost the Galaxy valuable points this season as they attempt to defend their MLS title.

Cudicini has reportedly suffered from a back issue that have kept him out of recent games and it appears Arena has concluded he can no longer rely on the 39-year-old as the MLS season enters its final sprint.
