U.S. Open Cup Update: Ventura County Fusion, PSA Elite win

usopencuplogoHere are the results from first round U.S. Open Cup games involving Southern California teams with capsule game reports provided by U.S. Soccer (but it appears the San Diego Flash had the easiest game). Complete U.S. Open Cup results are here.

  • Ventura County Fusion (PDL) 2, CD Aguiluchos (NPSL) 1: Ventura County Fusion overcame an early second-half deficit with back-to-back goals in a seven-minute stretch for a first-round victory at Ventura College. Chongo Kennedy converted a 53rd-minute penalty kick for the equalizer and English import Peter Gregory scored the game-winner in the 64th minute. The Fusion hosts USL PRO expansion squad Sacramento Republic on May 14.
  • San Diego Flash (NPSL) 1, S.C. Corinthians USA (US Club Soccer) 0 (forfeit): S.C. Corinthians USA withdrew from the competition as the team did not have enough approved players available before the roster deadline. The San Diego Flash was awarded a 1-0 victory.
  • PSA Elite (USASA) 1, LA Misioneros FC (PDL) 1 (PSA Elite wins 2-1 in PKs): Shorthanded PSA Elite overcame an overtime deficit and won in the shootout at StubHub Training Center Field in Carson. Javier Castro gave LA Misioneros a 1-0 lead in the 94th minute, but the 10-man PSA Elite side notched an equalizer in the 114th minute. Jose Preciado scored the game-tying goal, forcing the match into a shootout, where PSA Elite maintained that momentum en route to a 2-1 edge in penalties. PSA Elite advances to the second round to face the NPSL’s San Diego Flash on May 14.
