Where to Watch the World Cup in Southern California: U.S.-Ghana outdoors on Hermosa Beach’s Pier Plaza

One of the highlights of the 2010 World Cup for this native Englishman was watching the U.S.-England game outdoors on Pier Plaza in Hermosa Beach as waves crashed just feet away and no amount of craft beer could erase the horror of watching England goalkeeper Robert Green (no relation) let the ball through his legs for an American goal.

Ah, memories.

The LA Galaxy, which hosted the event, must have had a good time, too, because they’re doing it all over again at another free event at 3 p.m. Monday, June 16 when the U.S. opens group play against Ghana.

The Galaxy plan several others — details here – but this is the only free one open to the general public in Los Angeles County, so make plans now to call in sick to work (you didn’t read that here).

With the World Cup now only a week away we will be featuring a series of Southern California viewing party blog posts and articles so if you know of one, leave a comment or email me.

And pray there’s no June gloom that day.
