Chivas USA swaps Mauro Rosales for Vancouver’s Nigel Reo-Coker

So, it’s one under-performing highly-paid veteran for another then (the above video was produced by a B.C. newspaper when Nigel Reo-Coker originally joined the WhiteCaps).

Mauro Rosales, 33, (2014 salary $450,000) had zero goals in 16 starts for Chivas USA after joining from the Seattle Sounders at the start of the season; Nigel Reo-Coker, 30, ($446,500) had trouble making the starting XI this season as off field issues wore thin the Whitecaps’ patience.

The former EPL veteran had just one goal in his almost two seasons in Canada.

“Nigel is a fantastic box-to-box player that has proven to be a leader in this league,” said Chivas USA coach Wilmer Cabrera. “He is an unbelievably versatile player. We feel he can help us with his defending as well as going forward in the attack. We see his experience, leadership and great technique helping us in a lot of ways.”

The ‘Caps liked their acquisition, too.

Chivas USA play the Revs in Boston at 4:30 p.m. Saturday live on KDOC (Channel 56); Rosales could play against the Galaxy Saturday in Carson.

Watch: Landon Donovan hits winner as LA Galaxy come back from 3-1 deficit to beat the Rapids in Denver

Landon Donovan is going out in a blaze of glory, much-derided Alan Gordon scores and a Bruce Arena half time verbal blast gets the Galaxy back on track for a 4-3 road win over the Colorado Rapids after he labeled the defense an “embarrassment” as the Galaxy trailed by two goals in the first 45 minutes.

Quotable:

“There were some choice words (from Arena at halftime) that we absolutely deserved to hear,” Donovan said. “After what happened Saturday, and what happened in the first half, giving up seven goals in a game and a half is unacceptable for this team. The first order of business was defensively to do the job. We were embarrassing defensively, all of us, from front to back. We know we’re good enough to always get chances in games. We wanted to get the second goal. We thought if the second goal came, we could keep pushing. I was really proud of us at 3-3, after that first half a lot of teams would have closed up shop and tried to get a point. That wasn’t enough for us, we wanted to win the game. We needed these three points.”

“Landon dug deep,” Arena said. “I haven’t seen that kind of passion out of Landon in a game in a long time. He wanted to win and be an important part of our team to try to win this game. Landon did a terrific job.”

LA Galaxy to face Colorado Rapids at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet

The Rapids learned Monday they have lost captain Drew Moor to injury for the rest of the year, ghastly timing for such horrible news ahead of a game that could see the Rapids move within a point of the Galaxy and into the Western Conference playoff slots with a win.

English Premier League’s World Cup bump arrives

APTOPIX Britain Soccer Premier LeagueConverted: Record numbers of U.S. viewers watched the opening weekend of EPL action that included this Wayne Rooney goal for Manchester United in a losing cause against Swansea City (Associated Press photo).

That World Cup bump I wrote about a couple of weeks ago? It’s here.

NBC said today that:

  • Saturday’s Arsenal-Crystal Palace game on NBC averaged 885,000 viewers and became the most-watched opening weekend match in U.S. history. It out-drew last year’s corresponding fixture by 12 percent.
  • Sunday’s Newcastle-Manchester City game on NBCSN averaged 514,000 viewers, ranking it as the most-watched opening weekend game on cable in U.S. history. It topped the previous record holder in 2012 when ESPN showed the game.
  • All told, 3.3 million watched the five games that aired on NBC and NBCSN, the most ever for the opening weekend of EPL action.

Monday Morning Major League Soccer Wrap: Galaxy fall to worst defeat of season, Chivas USA-Vancouver scoreless at StubHub

Gyasi Zardes’ ninth goal in 10 games kept him on course for a call-up to the annual January USMNT camp, but he couldn’t prevent the Galaxy falling to their worst defeat of the season in Columbus against a Crew team LA made look better than they have most of the year.

The Galaxy also came up with a new excuse for losing — Landon Donovan’s farewell presentation by the Crew at the start of the game:

“It’s going to be happening every time,” Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. “It certainly looked distracting tonight.”

Meanwhile, Real Salt Lake reclaimed the Western Conference lead Saturday with a win over the Sounders. Standings.

Lastly, here’s how the Chivas USA game broke down by the numbers:
