MLS Video Preview: Galaxy (5-5-7) host Philadelphia Union (4-9-3) at 7:30 p.m. live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet

The Pulitzer Prize-winning team at a certain South Bay newspaper will conduct the coin toss ahead of the game between the two mediocre outfits.

Just as Galaxy starters begin to come back from injuries that have contributed to the club’s slow start to the season, the Union is short-handed for just that reason so expect the team to pack it in against LA tonight in search of a road point.

USA-Nigeria is third most-watched women’s soccer game of all time, but viewership still dwarfed by NBA finals

WCFox

Tuesday’s USA-Nigeria FIFA Women’s World Cup game attracted five million viewers on Fox making it the third most-watched women’s game of all time, but those numbers were still dwarfed by the sixth and deciding game of the NBA finals, which drew 23.3 million viewers over on ABC.

Only the USA-China 1999 Women’s World Cup Final (17,975,000) and the Japan-USA 2011 Women’s World Cup Final (13,458,000) were watched by more people than the USA-Nigeria game, Fox said.

About 52 percent more viewers tuned in for the third USA group game compared to its tournament opener.

Weekly Soccer Column: In praise of the underdog ahead of the Galaxy’s U.S. Cup game against amateur club PSA Elite (streamed live here)

usopencuplogoLA Galaxy and Guam defender A.J. DeLaGarza knows all about how small nations like the one he represents can ambush the big boys on occasion.

That sort of knowledge could be valuable tonight for the Galaxy in the U.S. Open cup against amateur team PSA Elite, although there were precisely zero upsets in the round of games played Tuesday in the knockout competition.

The 7:30 p.m. game at StubHub Center includes free parking, $2 tacos from Chancho’s Tacos and $2 beer. Tickets are $10. Or, you can watch here, for free
