When Bobby Wood snuck behind the Mexican defense and slotted the equalizing goal against Mexico into the back of the net in the 108th minute on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl, the United States men’s national team was thinking penalty kicks to decide the winner of the CONCACAF Cup.

Paul Aguilar changed that.

The Mexican defender one-touched a volley home in the 118th minute against the United States to give Mexico a thrilling 3-2 win and the right to represent CONCACAF in the Confederations Cup in 2017 in Russia.

The rebound off a Mexican free kick fell to Raul Jimenez, who flicked the ball up and over his head where it found Aguilar on the right side of the box for a powerful right-footed shot that beat U.S. goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

“If you’re going to lose, you might as well lose like that,” said U.S. defender Geoff Cameron, who scored the first goal for the Americans. “But obviously disappointed because we showed resilience, we showed the effort that we had, never say die attitude and we left it all on the field. It’s a tough one to swallow.” Saturday’s game was the first over the United States for Mexico since the 2011 Gold Cup, which was also the last time the two CONCACAF rivals faced off in the stories Rose Bowl. The win broke a six-game winless streak for Mexico. Read more about the game in our full gamer.
