The Galaxy’s Mike Magee scored two of MLS’ record-setting 36 goals on Sunday. The 36 goals across all 10 games was a record for an MLS opening weekend. It makes for a lot of fun, but for fans of good defense, it’s not necessarily the best product.
From SBNation: “Salary cap and closed system or not, MLS is always going to have trouble becoming the best soccer league in the world. The next-best alternative is having a genuinely silly product with a ton of goals. It might not have happened intentionally, but it appears that MLS has stumbled into exactly that kind of product.”
Magee’s first goal, a chip shot in the 65th minute that gave the Galaxy a 2-1 lead, is in the running for MLS Goal of the Week. It’s in the quarterfinals against the Crew’s bicycle kick against Portland by Federico Higuain.
