There’s not a lot of time to dwell on the Galaxy’s 4-2 win over New England on Sunday, because the team flies out to Philadelphia on Monday for a Wednesday game. It’s a quick turnaround combined with a difficult cross-country trip to visit a much-improved Philadelphia Union team.
The Union finished second-to-last in the weaker Eastern Conference last season, but are third in the conference after two months of the 2016 campaign.
Head coach Bruce Arena said the lineup will surely change between Sunday’s game and Wednesday. Mike Magee could play a larger role on Wednesday after starting Sunday’s match on the bench. Steven Gerrard said he played 30 minutes against the Revolution with the understanding that he would play a larger role against Philadelphia.
The former English international entered the game in the 60th minute at the same time New England was staging its comeback. At first, Gerrard worried if it was his fault that L.A. was playing so poorly, he joked, but he recovered to put in a tricky goal off an assist from Magee.
Each of the Galaxy’s designated players scored in a game for only the second time as Robbie Keane scored twice and Giovani dos Santos scored once. If not for an amazing diving save, dos Santos could have had two. Dos Santos’ brilliant volley surely deserves another look as the Mexican international continued his great run of form. It was his fifth goal in four games.
