Galaxy notes: Lineup changes are coming for Sunday’s regular season finale

The Galaxy wraps up the regular season Sunday against FC Dallas. While the game means a lot for FC Dallas (they’re in the hunt for the Supporters’ Shield), things are the opposite for the Galaxy.

The Galaxy is locked into the third-seed and will be home for the knockout-round, Oct. 26 galaxyor 27.

Bruce Arena that the lineup that he sends out will have a different look.

“Clearly, we’ll play a few different players, how many remains to be seen,” he said Wednesday.

Three players we will likely not see are Robbie Keane (hip flexor), Steven Gerrard (hamstring) and Gyasi Zardes (foot). Keane and Gerrard stayed behind and didn’t make the trip to Houston last week. Zardes has been rehabbing from his foot surgery.

“They’re making progress,” Arena said. “When they’re able to get back in remains to be seen.”

Galaxy wrap: Alan Gordon’s goal just enough for the Galaxy

By no means was it pretty, but it was memorable and just enough for the Galaxy.

Alan Gordon’s 72nd minute goal snapped a scoreless tie and proved to be enough to give the Galaxy a 1-0 victory on the road over Houston. The Galaxy caught a huge break on the goal with Houston defender David Horst actually playing the ball into Gordon’s direction.

The goal came on Gordon’s 35th birthday.

With the victory, the Galaxy improves to 51 points. They remain in third place and clinches a home match in the knockout round (Oct. 26 or 27).

Landon Donovan in starting lineup for the Galaxy

lineupThere is a familiar face in the starting lineup for the Galaxy and that’s Landon Donovan. With Robbie Keane (hip flexor) and Steven Gerrard (hamstring) sidelined, the possibility of Donovan getting more time this week was almost a given.

The Galaxy is coming off of a bye week and haven’t played since Oct. 1.

“A lot of times when you’re playing poorly and you lose, you want to get back on the field, but we needed time to reassess things and it gave us the chance to take step back, be honest and understand that if we want to have any chance of winning, there’s certain things we have to do right.

“We have as talented a team as any in this league. We know that. But if you don’t do the other things right, that the other teams in our league are doing, to be successful, then we have no chance. I think we’re all aware of that now

Galaxy preview: Fresh off the bye week, Galaxy hope to find right solutions

Did the bye week come at the right time for the Galaxy? galaxy

The true answer probably won’t be available until at least after today’s game at Houston (2 p.m.; Spectrum SportsNet). The Galaxy begins today in third place in the Western Conference on 48 points. There is the possibility that the club could end the day in fifth place.

If the Galaxy can clinch either third or fourth place, then they will host the knockout round game. If they’re fifth or sixth, then it is on the road as was the case last year.

“I don’t think we’ve lost any confidence,” Galaxy defender Daniel Steres said. “I think it helped having these two weeks to regroup, sort some things out, get together as a team and decide where we want to be in the next few months.”

To complicate matters, the Galaxy encountered travel issues out of LAX Saturday, with their plan being delayed several times.

Today is big.

returned to the practice field this week without Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane.

Thursday, Gerrard was spotted at Liverpool’s Melwood training groud Thursday by the Mirror.

The Galaxy confirmed Thursday that Gerrard is in England and  dealing with a hamstring issue that will knock him out of Sunday’s crucial match against Houston. The Galaxy begins the week in third place in the Western Conference.  If they finish in either third or fourth, they will host the knockout round game.

“I don’t expect him to be at the game Sunday,” Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said of Gerrard Thursday following training. “He won’t be playing on Sunday …he’ll be back next week. He has a hamstring injury.”

Keane was also absent at training. He was apparently in the training room. On if he expects him to play, Arena said “it remains to be seen.”

ESPN reported that Gerrard would be back on Friday.

“How they hell would they know,” Arena said. “Who cares if he’s back Friday or Saturday or Sunday? Does that really matter?”
