Long-serving LA Galaxy defender A.J. DeLaGarza traded to Houston Dynamo

thanksAJ

And with the above image used in a Galaxy tweet Friday, one of the longest-serving LA players ever — highly-regarded and popular defender AJ DeLaGarza — was gone, heading for the Houston Dynamo for a combined $175,000 in allocation money.

“This decision was extremely difficult to make,” Galaxy General Manager Peter Vagenas said. “A.J. is a champion and will always mean so much to this club, this city and our fans. We thank him for his many contributions to the Galaxy and know he will forever be a part of our family. With that said, we feel that this will give us flexibility to strengthen our roster going forward with the use of additional allocation money.”

From the Galaxy press release:

DeLaGarza was drafted by the Galaxy in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft and has been with the club for eight seasons, making 204 appearances and 196 starts in MLS Regular Season matches and 16 appearances and 13 starts in the MLS Cup Playoffs. He will join the Dynamo as a three-time MLS Cup winner as a member of the Galaxy (2011, 2012, 2014).

The defender is one of just five players to make over 200 appearances for the Galaxy, alongside Cobi Jones, Landon Donovan, Kevin Hartman, and Mauricio Cienfuegos.

The trade must have come as quite a shock to DeLaGarza; he hasn’t Tweeted in reaction to the trade.

Former Chicago Fire midfielder Logan Pause named Orange County Blues coach

Pause

Logan Pause, who served as head coach of the Chicago Fire’s PDL affiliate, while also an assistant coach with the senior squad after a 12-year MLS playing career, has joined the OC Blues team, as head coach, the USL club announced today.

“We went through an exhaustive search over the last couple of months to identify a head coach who not only could succeed in the USL, but also understands the importance of developing talented professional soccer players within Orange County and for our partner club LAFC,” GM Oliver Wyss said. “We feel that Logan is the prototype of what we were looking for based on his experience, passion, work ethic and commitment to the community.”

The Blues have struggled for market visibility since the club began playing in 2011, are now under new ownership and are affiliated with MLS expansion club LAFC.

The Blues attracted just over 1,000 fans a game last season in Irvine, one of the lowest home averages in the USL.

A rebranding is under way.

MLS Combine: Nick DePuy ready to take next step in professional career

Nick DePuy started his soccer playing in Southern California, as a resident of Irvine.

This week, he’s back, paving the way to the first big professional step on his journey.

DePuy, who attended Mater Dei HS for one year before moving to Colorado, mls_logo-svgis one of participants in this week’s MLS Player Combine. The ultimate goal is to have his named called during Friday’s MLS SuperDraft.

He played four years at UC Santa Barbara.

“It was a great experience,” DePuy said of his time at UC Santa Barbara. “I worked really hard. Coming into my freshman year, I was a high recruit, but I wasn’t guaranteed any minutes.”

It also wasn’t any guarantee that DePuy would end up with the career that he eventually had for the Gauchos.

DePuy arrived at UCSB as a defender and it took a bit of being at the right place at the right time for him to move up the field.

“I ended up starting three games in,” he said. “My second year, I started out as a defender again, at center back, and then one of our strikers went down with an injury.

“My coach, halfway through the season, put me up top. I scored a bunch of goals my sophomore (10) year, had a really good junior year (15 goals).”

After his junior year, DePuy said he started receiving interest from professional teams, but decided to return for his senior year, where he scored just six goals and he added that his last year “was kind of disappointing.”

“We lost a lot of guys that I didn’t think we were going to lose,” he said. “My junior year, we went to the Sweet 16 and we only had three seniors that we knew we were losing.  By the start of summer, we had five or six starters that were either injured of transferred. We had a bunch of new players and a lot young guys as well and I believe that the connection and chemistry wasn’t as good as it was the other years.

DePuy went on trial with clubs in Europe recently. He said that he learned a lot. Now, he’s trying to put everything to use to catch the eye of the MLS Scouts that will result in his name being called during Friday’s SuperDraft.

“It has always been a dream of mine to go professional,” he said. “This has always been a hobby for my, but once my sophomore and junior year hit, I was like this could really happen and my dream is really going to come true.”
