The L.A. Galaxy used a controversial goal to break a 1-1 tie against amateur side La Maquina during overtime of Tuesday’s U.S. Open Cup game at StubHub Center as Baggio Husidic sent a quick free kick over to Dave Romney while players from both teams were standing idly by after a foul. Romney scored on an open net while his teammate Jose Villarreal was lying on the ground.

Deadspin called it a “cheap, fake goal.” Husidic, Romney and Sebastian Lletget agreed that there was some controversy to the goal, but said it was just a heads-up, legal play.

Husidic said he confirmed with the referee that there would be no whistle, then passed it out to Romney, who hesitated before he finished the shot. It was the defender’s first goal of the season with the first team, but Romney admitted he would have liked it to come under better circumstances. LA Galaxy Update: Alan Gordon gold for USMNT, while another domino falls in the Giovani Dos Santos lottery ahead of tonight’s U.S. Open cup game

LAGordoGolden Guy: Alan Gordon has been called up to the USMNT for the remainder of the Gold Cup (Associated Press Photo).

A lack-luster Gold Cup so far for the U.S. has prompted coach Jurgen Klinsmann to call up a trio of reinforcements including Galaxy “super sub” Alan Gordon.

Here’s more from the Galaxy press release:

Gordon will depart following the Galaxy’s U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal game against Real Salt Lake on Tuesday, July 14 and be unavailable for selection when the Galaxy face the San Jose Earthquakes at StubHub Center on Friday, July 17. The forward will join LA Galaxy teammates Omar Gonzalez and Gyasi Zardes, who helped the U.S. to a first-place finish in Group A.

The Long Beach product made his first and only appearance for his country in 2012 as a substitute against Antigua and Barbuda in a FIFA World Cup Qualifying match when he provided the game-winning assist to Eddie Johnson. Gordon was also called up for the 2013 Gold Cup after the USMNT advanced to the group stage. This season for the Galaxy, Gordon has made 20 appearances and six starts, recording four goals including two game-winning goals. Since joining the Galaxy last season, he has recorded nine goals and an assist in 34 MLS appearances.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy today edged closer to a likely Giovanni Dos Santos deal, just a few days after an MLS rule change (convenient that) appeared to pave the way for the signing:

The LA Galaxy have received allocation money from New York City FC in exchange for an International roster spot, the club announced today. Per MLS and club policy, exact terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Real Salt Lake hosts LA Galaxy July 14 in U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals

After dispatching the San Jose Earthquakes 0-1 on the road in a U.S. Open Cup game Wednesday night — something they haven’t done in 16 MLS games and counting — the Galaxy will face Real Salt lake July 14 in the quarterfinals of the knockout tournament.

From the Galaxy press release:

The Galaxy have reached the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals stage for the first time since 2011 and were the only road team to advance past the Round of 16 in this year’s tournament.

On Wednesday night, the Galaxy defeated the Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium behind a first-half goal from forward Jose Villarreal, his third goal of the season for the Galaxy in all competitions. In the tournament’s fourth round, the Galaxy earned a 6-1 victory over PSA Elite at StubHub Center behind a hat trick from Robbie Keane and goals from Sebastian Lletget, Gyasi Zardes and Baggio Husidic.

The Galaxy are 25-12-1 all-time in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. They have entered the Open Cup every year since 1999, winning the tournament in 2001 and 2005 while reaching the Open Cup Final on two other occasions.

Should the Galaxy advance, they would face the Central bracket winner between Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City in the Open Cup Semifinals on Aug. 11 or Aug. 12.

LA Galaxy travel to San Jose to play Earthquakes July 1 in the U.S. Open Cup round of 16

The road game in the knockout tournament is scheduled just four days after the Galaxy were set to travel to the Bay Area for a June 27 game against San Jose as part of MLS Rivalry Week.

The winner will play the victor of the game between Real Salt Lake and the Portland Timbers.
