Galaxy’s Jelle Van Damme headed to All-Star Game

mlsstarGalaxy defender Jelle Van Damme was added to the MLS All-Star Roster, Tuesday.

Van Damme has made 17 appearances for the Galaxy in his first year in MLS. The central defender has played a large role in the Galaxy’s strong defensive unit that has allowed 19 goals this season.

Van Damme joins Giovani dos Santos as the Galaxy’s representatives on the All-Star roster.

Van Damme and FC Dallas’ Kellyn Acosta were selected as replacements for Sporting Kansas City’s Matt Besler and Portland’s Liam Ridgewell.

The MLS All-Stars will face Arsenal FC, Thursday at Avaya Stadium in San Jose at 4:30 p.m., ESPN; UniMas

Galaxy recap: Galaxy pick up another road victory

The Galaxy is becoming good at grinding out road victories. galaxy

For the second consecutive road game, the Galaxy scored early and defended strong late, leading to a 2-1 victory at Portland. The Galaxy is now 3-3-4 on road and snaps Portland’s nine-game unbeaten streak. The Galaxy improves to 9-3-8 overall and extends its winning streak to four and unbeaten streak to six.

Robbie Keane opened the scoring in the seventh minute and Gyasi Zardes followed in the 11th for an early 2-0 lead for the Galaxy.

Zarek Valentin got Portland on the board in the 41st minute. The goal snapped a streak of 310 minutes since the last goal allowed by the Galaxy.

From there, the Galaxy defended and withstood the second half push from the Timbers to record the three points to move to 35. Goalkeeper Brian Rowe was credited with five saves.

Arsenal announces preliminary roster California trip

Arsenal will face the MLS All-Stars, July 28 in San Jose and a couple of days later, the arsenal1London club will take on Chivas Guadalajara at StubHub Center (July 30). Arsenal released its 20-man travel roster for the games, Friday.

Galaxy notes: Nigel de Jong to see action against Portland?

Nigel de Jong returned to game action in Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal and went 90 minutes.

De Jong had been out of action since July 4. He had missed the previous two league games due to red card suspension.

Arena said that de Jong will make the trip to Portland for Saturday’s game.

“His first game in some weeks and he played himself into the game,” Arena said. “It was important for him to play last night to get him ready for games down the road.”

It will be interesting to see if de Jong is in the first 11 on Saturday. Remember he was suspended for three games earlier this season for a tackle against Darlington Nagbe.

Galaxy to host U.S. Open Cup semifinal

The Galaxy will host FC Dallas in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals, Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. The hosts were confirmed through a draw process, Thursday morning in Chicago.

The Galaxy defeated Seattle, 4-2 in Wednesday’s quarterfinal to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2006.

In the other semifinal, New England will host Chicago, Tuesday, Aug. 9.

Chicago has the highest host priority for the final. For the Galaxy to host, it will need a victory over FC Dallas and a New England victory over Chicago.

The final is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 21.
