U.S. Women Lose Olympic Opener & More

| | Comments (1) |

So much for the idea the U.S. might actually be better off without injured striker Abby Wambach.

The U.S. women lost their opener 2-0 to Norway today, with both goals coming off their opponents' only two shots in the first half.

Game story.

Full Olympics soccer coverage.

The U.S. men open their tournament at 2 a.m. Thursday against Japan.

In the SuperLiga final Tuesday, the New England Revolution - vanquishers of Chivas USA - beat the Houston Dynamo 6-5 on penalty kicks.

The biggest surprise in this game might be that Lawndale's Kei Kamara actually found the net for Houston. The second biggest surprise: so did Houston's Nate Jaqua, the former goal-averse Galaxy forward.

The attendance without any Mexican teams involved in the final: just 9,232

*From the (edited) Galaxy press release:

reserve goalkeeper Charles Alamo and midfielder Michael Gavin each suffered serious injuries in Sunday night's reserve game in San Jose (a 1-0 loss) and will miss extended periods of time. Alamo suffered a partial tear of the ACL in his left knee, which he had undergone surgery on in February and will be placed on the season ending injury list, while Gavin suffered a right foot fracture and underwent surgery on Tuesday that will keep him on the sidelines for a minimum of six weeks.

You've got to feel for rookie Alamo, who is having a horrific start to his MLS career
