Bruce Arena is OK with only one All-Star

Were you surprised that the Galaxy only had one All-Star (Giovani dos Santos) named for the July 28 game against Arsenal?

Bruce Arena wasn’t.

“No, I think what the league did was they gave each team basically a representative,” Arena said Monday. “The All-Star Game is whatever you want it to be. It is really for fans and sponsors, more than anything.

“I think the league on purpose, tried to get representation for every club and in all honesty, most clubs would probably prefer only having one All-Star, so you don’t have guys missing the week and then scrambling to get ready for the next game. I think it is understood that this year, without them saying publicly, my guess is that it was bit of a balancing act.”

Osorio announced the roster Tuesday, but chose to keep the specifics of his conversation with dos Santos private.

Dos Santos declined to comment on the national team situation while on Sirus XM Radio with Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl.

Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena said both Giovani dos Santos and Dan Kennedy will be out for the Galaxy’s game at Colorado on Saturday.

Both dos Santos and Kennedy left last Sunday’s season opener against D.C. United with leg injuries. Kennedy left in the 20th minute after appearing to injure his groin or hamstring taking a goal kick. Dos Santos has a muscle strain in his left leg and left at halftime.

With dos Santos’ injury, Mike Magee figures to keep his spot on the field after he fueled the Galaxy’s 4-1 win against D.C. United after subbing in at halftime. Brian Rowe will start in goal for Kennedy after he had five saves in the season opener.

Forward Alan Gordon (neck) returned to the field Thursday for practice.

After injuring his leg in the first half of the Galaxy’s season opener against D.C. United, goalkeeper Dan Kennedy is likely out for the team’s game against Colorado on Saturday, head coach Bruce Arena said.

It looked as it Kennedy injured either his hamstring or groin on a goal kick, defender Daniel Steres said after the game. Arena characterized the injury simply as a “muscle strain” while the team continues to evaluate the 33-year-old goalkeeper.

Brian Rowe stepped in to goal and had five saves in the Galaxy’s 4-1 win over D.C. United.  Continue reading “Galaxy injury notes: Dan Kennedy likely out for Colorado” »

After a slew of injuries this season, the Galaxy are getting healthy at the right time.

Head coach Bruce Arena said Friday “this is as close to us getting healthy as it’s been the whole year,” with Robbie Keane and Steven Gerrard echoing that sentiment.

Arena was coy about specifics concerning Giovani dos Santos (groin), Robbie Rogers (hip) and Baggio Husidic (hamstring), saying simply “we haven’t ruled anyone out” due to injury.

Dos Santos, who missed last week’s epic CONCACAF clash due to a groin injury, said Friday he felt fit after training for the past three days. He said it is the same injury that hampered him at the Gold Cup this summer. Initially, dos Santos was expected to miss two to three weeks with the injury.

The 26-year-old said he feels fit enough to go 90 minutes in Sunday’s game against Portland.

With the playoffs around the corner, dos Santos said it is also important to ensure his health for the stretch run of the season.

“If I don’t feel healthy enough I don’t want to put myself in a bad position,” dos Santos said. “I am smart with that, if I feel something tomorrow or during the game, I won’t risk my body.”

Speaking of dos Santos, he was at the grand opening of a Nike store in East L.A. on Thursday and showed off some of his skills.
