Torrance Unveils Events Calendar on City Web Site - A Decade Late

How many city employees (and years) does it take to put an events calendar for Torrance up on the municipal Web site?

A "team" of a half dozen or so, apparently if Tuesday's City Council meeting is any indication.

So notorious is the city of Torrance for being a black hole of basic information for residents, even a couple of elected officials couldn't resist a couple of pointed jabs Tuesday when bureaucrats unveiled a much-vaunted events calendar.

"This is probably 10 years overdue," said Mayor Frank Scotto.

One of the city's two (!) public relations types then spent a few minutes giving a demo of the calendar to the virtually empty council chambers (but you were all watching at home, right?).

"This is only the beginning in using electronic tools to communicate with residents," said newly-elected Councilman Cliff Numark, who had made that part of his campaign platform.

Don't bet on it, Cliff.

Remember, these are the city officials who believed sending out a flyer to residents and businesses who live within a few hundred feet of Torrance Boulevard and sticking up a couple of reader boards next to the road (with the wrong dates) constituted adequate notification of a huge construction project on one of the city's major thoroughfares.

The events calendar is very nice though.
