Truck overturned in San Pedro

If our San Pedro readers happened to notice a bunch of police cars and helicopters earlier this afternoon, and traffic snarls around Western Avenue right now, this is why:

An 18-wheeler truck headed down Western toward Paseo del Mar overturned around 3:30 p.m., prompting road closures for a couple hours as crews worked to remove the vehicle and clean up spilled fuel, authorities said.

The truck's driver was taken by ambulance to the nearby Korean Friendship Bell at Angels Gate Park, from where he was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment.

Police didn't know the extent of his injuries, what kind of cargo he was hauling or why his truck overturned.

But if you've driven that road before, you might have some insight into how curvy and narrow it is. Now imagine doing that in a big ole truck.
