At today's Congressional hearing on the White House party crashers, Rep. Jane Harman suggested that the Secret Service could learn a thing or two from Bruce Springsteen:
My question is should we have a better business model here... I attended recently the Bruce SpringsteenSadly no, says the director of the Secret Service, Mark Sullivan:
concert in Washington. It was quite wonderful... It was also a very smooth security
experience. Tickets were received well in advance. They were printed on high-tech tamper-proof paper. They came with bar codes
that were quickly scanned for authenticity. There were no lines. There was no confusion and there was no security
problem. I am not suggesting that Christmas at the White House is a Bruce Springsteen concert, but I am suggesting that there may be more modern
techniques for screening people who are trying to enter the White House building.
In this particular case, again, I don't think any level of technology, I don't think any level ofHarman brought this up again during her appearance today on the Andrea Mitchell show, where she was booked to talk about Afghanistan:
funding is the reason for why this happened. Pure and simple, this is
a human error. We could have had the best technology. We could have had all the funding that we'd ever want, but this still would not have prevented this from happening. If people don't follow the established guidelines, it's, something like this is gonna happen.
