Rod Wright's "pending matter"

A bit late getting to this. Per California's Capitol, last week Sacramento lobbyists got the following e-mail from Sen. Rod Wright:

Dear Friend,

I would like to invite you to join me for a briefing on Wednesday, December 2nd.

I would like to discuss with you a pending matter and answer any of your questions and enlist your support.

I know this message may seem a bit cryptic but I beg your indulgence ...

OK, so that was weird.

The Sacramento Bee's Capitol Alert followed up, and learned that Wright is being investigated by the FPPC.

This investigation is not to be confused with the Los Angeles District Attorney's ongoing investigation into whether Wright lives in his district.

No, no. This investigation aims to determine whether Wright properly identified the purpose of his new legal defense fund.

When asked about this by the Sacramento Bee, Wright said the account would be used for "any legal fees that I incur in connection with any legal issue." The reporter then asked if there are any other legal issues out there other than the residency investigation, to which Wright replied, "not that I would discuss in the paper."

Rim shot.

Today, the L.A. Times followed up on this, and got Wright to say that he would amend the paperwork to clarify that the legal fund is indeed meant to defend himself on the residency issue. But he told the Times he didn't do anything wrong because the fund has not raised any money.

"There is no legal issue.... There is no case," he told the Times.

Wright owns a house in Baldwin Hills, which is not in his district. He lists as his official residence a fourplex in Inglewood, which he has owned for 30 years and which is in his district.
