An old scam is reportedly hitting South Bay homeowners again, and it appears these jerks are getting even greedier.
Seniors, in particular, are being targeted by a Los Angeles-based company, Title Compliance Office, that has received a "F" grade by the California Better Business Bureau. The company is sending out official-looking letters that warn residents to secure a copy of their grant deed immediately.
"To obtain an official certified copy of your Grant Deed, complete the order form below and return it in the enclosed envelope with your processing fee of one hundred fifty seven dollars payable to: Title Compliance Office," according to the letter. (A few years ago, they reportedly charged $79 for this "service.")
The letter even lists a deadline of July 30, 2010, and a bold warning that "this may be our only notice to you."
Don't be fooled. Any homeowner can get a copy of their grant deed for roughly $12 (for printing and mailing) through the office of the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. To contact this office, call 562-462-2133 or recorder@rrcc.lacounty.gov.
