Running back due back this week

Mira Costa opened its football season without running back Chris Loatman last Friday in a 23-7 loss to Loyola, but Coach Don Morrow wasn't making any excuses.

"Loyola was a terrific defensive team," Morrow said.

Loatman missed the game due to an ankle injury, but Morrow said the senior running back should be back for Friday's game against South Torrance.

It won't get any easier from there for Mira Costa, which then follows with staunch tests against Esperanza, Narbonne and Newport Harbor.

Morrow said the encouraging sign for his team was that the defense was vastly improved, a point of emphasis in the offseason. Expect a tough Mira Costa squad come Bay League time.
