I was at the Carson game, and I don't normally bring up the referees. In fact, I chide those (coaches and fans) who bring up the referees in losses. But in this case, it is warranted. Carson got homered.
These referees were horrendous. They blew three first-half fumbles (2 for Carson, 1 for Venice), ruling them down, their explanations were baffling and their sense of perception unreal.
They flagged one Carson sideline player 15 yards for using the "F" word, which blows me away considering how much profanity is used by coaches and administrators at most football games (if you're not hearing what I'm hearing you're not listening very closely). And he was trying to fire up his teammates (although probably not in the best way) and was not cursing at the referees. It's a playoff game. Let's keep perspective.
They even flagged one Carson player five yards for having his knees showing. Just give him a warning and get back to the game.
But the call of the night came in the third quarter. There was a fake punt by Carson. Punter Juan Sanchez stepped out of bounds before getting the first down, but was knocked down well after the whistle blew, and the flags flew. Not surprisingly, it was a late hit, but instead of keeping the ball, Carson's offense had to scamper off the field quickly when it realized the referees said it was a dead-ball play and that the penalty would be assessed on Venice after the change of possession. Sorry refs, you got this wrong. A late hit is still part of the same play, and Carson should have had a first down.
Though I agree with Carson coach Mike Christensen -- the refs didn't cost Carson the game, the Colts still had an opportunity to win. I just don't like when the refs have that much of an influence on a game.
You couldn't have said any better "Tony." I felt the referees were either looking at another game or just trying to show their doing their job by have a yellow flag party. I have never seen so many flags for things that would be originally warned and the knee showing issue almost floored me. I understand to keep the game under control but you have to let the players play too.The referees in this game should be re-evaluated. They were horrible.
Tony...could the bad officiating be connected to the fact that it was; 1) Carson, the Notre Dame of City football, 2) that the Marine league sent an unprecedented '5' teams to the city-championship-play-offs, 3) the anticipating of a Marine league city-final -Narbonne and San Pedro-which would be the 11th all Marine league city final, being Carson and Banning met for the 4A titles in 1978, 79, 81, 83, 84, 85, 86, 88 90 and 00...A little subliminal jealousy maybe? Just an opinion...
It's city ball. It's city refs. Why the shock!
The colts are not what they used to be, what once was proud, we can beat anyone attitude, hard nose foorball team has turned into a sorry bunch of players who would have a hard time beating some of the local pop warner teams, it a sad sad time to be a colt fan
Did the crew have the female official? i say this not because of gender, but mechanics. when on crews, I've noticed that these crews tend to have the worse positioning and interpretations. they seem to be covering for each other all the time because someone is always out of position or not focused on their duty. It's time to do as they do in jc's and ding these poor teams and refs. If we have to start using cross overs from the southern section during the playoffs
Sorry Tony, but that's L.A.City football for you.
The ref's in the city have always been the worst; that's life so deal with it. I'm am so tired of hearing these so called great teams whining and crying about how they got hosed by the ref's, maybe they were just out played by a better team.
How many times has Carson won with the help of the ref's, but nobody seemed to mention that. Or maybe it's just old Daily Breeze bias talking.
I'm sure next Wednesday, San Pedro with get all the breaks so you won't have to whine anymore. All great teams have the ability to overcome adversity; if Carson is a great team, they will overcome this adversity too. Both teams played on the same field with the same refs and when the clock ran out, the better team won that night.
Old School Colt,
I played fotball for coach Vole, and we won a championship. In three years ('81-'84), we lost a total of two games. I understand exactly what you mean of what Carson used to be. But let me ask YOU a question. What have YOU done lately to help the pogram and its players/staff/program maintain its level of excellence. I am lucky enough to teach and coach football at Carson. One of the main reasons for a decline at Carson has to do with thet budget. How? The facilities (weightroom, lockerroom, stadium, etc.) have become decrepit. Our funding has not kept up with the Southern section. We can not have three teams as does the Southern section beacuse we can't compete financially to pay coaches. We have to fundraise extensively which takes a lot of time and effort. During the summer, many parents regard us a "day-care" and just drop off kids. The parent participation in the Carson program is ATROCIOUS!!! Yes, we do have a precious few who do pitch in with team meals and transportation. Thanks to you guys!
When we go to San Pedro to play, you can see the participation of the entire community and all of the parents. We are envious and S.P. has nowhere near the tradion and championships that we do. (No offense Pedro, you guys do your thing!)
By the way, we did go to the semis in our first year as coaches at the C-House, and to the Coliseum in our second. I know that we as a staff will never be satisfied unless we win a championship.
So Old School Colt, you are OFFICIALLY being called out to get up off your...chair and come on in and see how you can pitch in. This goes out to all Old School Colts. Come back and be part of this rebuilding process.
Sincerely
