Long road ahead for Mira Costa

If Mira Costa is going to have a shot at its eighth CIF state title, it will have to take a long and perilous road.

Mira Costa paid the price for not closing out its CIF Southern Section Division I-AA title match against Santa Margarita, drawing a first-round road match at L.A. City Section champion Palisades in the first round of the CIF Division I state playoffs on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

But that's not the killer part.

If Mira Costa, which earned the No. 3 seed despite Saturday's loss, takes care of business at Palisades, it will likely have to play at second-seeded La Costa Canyon in the second round on Saturday and try to beat a team that handed the Mustangs (27-5) one of their five losses on the season.

"We're looking forward to state. We want to redeem ourselves," outside hitter Emma White said after the Mustangs' dramatic 23-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 23-21 loss to Santa Margarita on Saturday.

Mira Costa is the only local team to make the state playoffs in any division.

La Costa Canyon hosts Santa Barbara in the first round.

Santa Margarita earned the top seed and will host San Diego Section runner-up Torrey Pines. If it can carry the momentum of its stunning win over Mira Costa, Santa Margarita plays the Dos Pueblos-Clovis West winner in the second round.

Mira Costa won't get another shot at Archbishop Mitty, which is the top seed in the Division II Northern California playoffs. Nevada Union is the top seed from Northern California in Division I.

The Southern California finals will be at home sites on Dec. 2. The state final will be played at UC Irvine on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.
