Happy Costa.JPGMira Costa's girls volleyball team appears to be peaking heading into the CIF playoffs, which puts a smile on the face of coach Lisa Zimmerman.
 
"I think we're still improving," Zimmerman said after a 25-8, 25-20, 25-17 sweep of rival Redondo on Thursday. "The players are gelling.  They've taken what we've showed them and now they are taking ownership on the court."
 
Star  Falyn Fonoimoana, already committed to USC as a junior, says her game is improving because the players around her are getting better.
 
"In the beginning of the season, I had to worry more about the other girls," Fonoimoana said. "Now they are fine on their own so I can concentrate more on my own game."

Dave Thorpe

Dave Thorpe was a self-proclaimed, slightly above average baseball player back in the day at Torrance's West High, who went on and had an unspectacular, injury-riddled stint as a third baseman at El Camino College. Trading bat for pen, Thorpe wrote sports for the Long Beach Union newspaper at Long Beach State University, then worked as the sports editor for the Palos Verdes Peninsula News for seven years before climbing down the Hill to the Daily Breeze, where he has been a sports writer covering local sports for more than two years.
