No. 2 seed Serra defeats El Segundo, 35-28, to advance to the CIF Southern Section Northwest Division title game next Friday at top seed Oaks Christian (13-0). Serra (13-0) lost to Oaks Christian in last year's semifinals. El Segundo finished 10-3.

There should be a full story and a photo gallery from tonight's game available in a few hours from now at dailybreeze.com.

Well I guess El Segundo can play. What a good game. Eagles we are proud of you this one could have gone either way with a differant bounce of the ball. Good luck next week Serra

HAIL TO THE RED AND BLUE

ES definitely could compete - there was no question about that. Tough loss, but what a great season. The Eagles proved many of the naysayers and doubters wrong all season.

So close. What a great high school football playoff game. Throughout four rounds in the 13 CIF-SS divisions, not many games come down to wire like it did tonight. Great battle put up by the ES Eagles. They have nothing to be ashamed about. Great game and great season.

Serra is damn good, with sick athletes all over the field. That said, one bounce of the ball and it very well could have been a different game. Anyone who saw it has to know that it just as easily could have been the Eagles ready to run the Oaks gauntlet next week. I hope ES gets the respect they deserve for a season that showed talent, heart and a very clear deomonstration they are among the very best in the area this year....

I hope the Breeze shows ES the respect they deserve after a great game. South Bay football isn't all about what the Torrance schools, local City teams and Serra do....a few others can play!

Good Job Serra!!!! Although, you were playing against two teams (es&the refs). It is clear the you were the winner of this game and should of had more, but that's okay a win is a win.

Congrats to Serra! Spann (#12) you showed the city of El Segundo what you are really made of. Oaks Christian look out Serra is out to redeem themselves and you may not like the outcome. Go Serra!

The guys in the striped shirts kept E/S in the game. There was a number of B.S. pass interference and personal foul calls against Serra. I wonder how many penalty yards we had??? The article doesn't say anything about those phantom calls. Anyways, Serra won a hard fought game. Both defenses played well. Spann was "the man." He definitely deservers the game ball... Now let's become "Lion tamers," and make Oaks Christian crap out on their quest for 7. Aint no party like a S-House party!!!

Ya right.. phantom calls you must be out of your mind. Thoses were legit penalties and you would know it if you have ever watched a football game before. Hard fought game by both teams, good job.

I didnt get a chance to see the game last night, but after seeing the Verb game I know Serra is stacked and can play with the best of them. Lets go S-House, show them Oaks boys what time it is.

Great game! My congratulations to the Eagles for a great season. A bigger CONGRATULATIONS to the CAVALIERS. Note to coaching staffing: Please keep all players focused as next week's game is Serra's biggest challenge. Serra intercepted the ball with less than a minute to seal the game, but it could have easily been a tie because Serra's player did not go down after the interception.

Steve Shevlin = coach of the year. Hopefully El Segundo will get the respect that they deserve from the Daily Breeze. It is a legit program that has built quarterbacks from the ground up since 1998. No other program has been able to consistently produce from that position for that long. congrats on an amazing year.

Serra rocks!!! Let's bring the Northwest Division title home to Gardena.

El Segundo did this all with 27 players...unbelievable. 27!

Great game. No need to bring the refs into this one. All good calls that night. What was this 40 point underdog B.S. Serra will need a lot of help to beat Oaks Christian. Good luck Cavs !

Congrats to both Serra and ES for a game well played, but I don't think the ES Coach will get coach of the year from the Daily Breeze. It's going to come down between four different coaches (Narbonne, San Pedro, Serra, and Mira Costa) and it will depend upon the coach's team that wins in the championships!! The South Bay really represented this year. They are sending four teams to compete in three championship games (Narbonne vs. San Pedro - City Championship), (Mira Costa - Western Championship), and (Serra - Northwest Championship). To have this many teams going in one season from this area says a lot about the football being played and the amount of talent in this area as well. I'm sort of new to the area (been here about 3 years). My kid plays ball at Costa, but we lost to Narbonne and it helped wake them up and buckle down for the remainder of the season. Take Costas coach Don Morrow, who had a dismal season last year 2-7-1, turned his program around, won the Bay League, now going to the Championship, and that still may not be enough for him to win Coach of the Year? Who ever gets it, it will definitely be well deserved, but I truly think Coach Morrow's name from Mira Costa Mustangs should be thrown into the vote as well ... Go Boys from all of the South Bay schools and represent well!!

To SeminoleFan2: It's refreshing to read a well though out statement that provides support for your position. Reading most of this trash talking crap, although interesting at times, becomes laborious and ridiculous. It does, however, provide some insight as to why people treat people the way they do in today's society. What a sad state of affairs! I'm an El Segundo football parent and although I think Coach Shevlin has done a phenomenal job with the boys this year; I too think he has some very stiff competition, given the other coaches that are probably in the mix. Anyway, WELL SAID SeminoleFan2.

I think El Segundo Coach Shevlin certainly should be coach of the year. He coached the 27 kids (yes, 27--most teams had 40/50 --I think Serra had 60) to play in most cases with a significant size difference on the lines (certainly in the playoffs), no Pac 10 or similar "signed" players, no recruiting except from the school stock (and, no open enrollment --think Long Beach Poly). He coached this Cinderella team to success beyond many expectations. Way to go El Segundo Eagles!
