Former Palos Verdes football coach Pat Fresch has been hired as the offensive coordinator at South Torrance, joining Coach Josh Waybright's staff.
Fresch, fired Dec. 15 after seven seasons of building Palos Verdes' program from scratch, said he had eight other offers to join coaching staffs in the South Bay. He added that he didn't apply for any head coaching vacancies.
"I was very flattered by the offers - it was nice to be wanted," Fresch said. "I'm very happy to be calling the offense and not dealing with the headache of head coaching, given the circumstances."
Fresch said he always has had a camaraderie with Waybright and liked the fact that South is just five minutes from his Rancho Palos Verdes home.
Fresch also liked the idea of staying with his two Palos Verdes coaches - line coach Dave Porter and tight end/defensive ends coach Chris Miller - who will join him at South.
Both coaches helped Fresch compile a 27-35-1 record over six seasons at Palos Verdes, including an 8-3 campaign a year ago that included an improbable Bay League title,
"Waybright was like, 'Hey, I need your help,' and I was like, 'Sure.' It was a good fit," Fresch said.

I wish coach fresch the best of luck he is a really nice man and I hope everything works out
Good for him. He was definitely screwed but I hope he gets a new head coaching job in the future.
Poor Greg Holt. Fresch owns him. Now South will really roll over West. Nice hire. What rivalry!!!!
South doesn't have the "entitled" boosters and a paid for principal like PV. There is more reality than fantasy at South, he should get a fair shake. Good hire Waybright.

Good hire. But the offense hasn't been the problem over there lately as I noticed reading the scores in the Daily Breeze on Saturday mornings. South can put up 30 points on the board and then whoever is running the defense will give us 35 points. But the new hire is a good one and Fresch knows the game of football. The problem over at South is whoever is calling/ coorinating the defense is brain dead. A 10 year old could do a better job putting together a better defensive scheme than whoever is doing it now. They need to get rid of their DC. They threw away two potentially really good seasons in a row because whoever is running that defense is running a defense from the stone age; right out of something you would see watching the Flinstones. South consistently grooms some of the most talented athletes in the South Bay each year and no one over there knows how to play the kids at defense properly. Well.............anyway............they are half way there with this new hire and good luck to them and we all wish them a successful season.
Now for the Defense - good post - I had a son who played at El Segundo this year and we had a Pioneer League combine type of thing for the first time last spring where all teams entered for lifting and speed competitions and South wiped everyone out. It was ugly. I have never seen anything like it before. We took a good pounding. We felt helpless after that competition. Our team along with the other teams felt like South was going to kill everyone in the season because of that. They had some really strong and fast players. Not only were their players the strongest, but South had the fastest. I thought that Lawndale would at least have someone faster than their guys but they didn't. South had some fast white boys. How in the world did their coach ruin that team? There is no excuse for the type of defense they ran this year. We out schemed South and their coach had no answers how to stop our QB and receivers. I guess they don't believe in putting pressure on QB's. South should have gone undeafted this year in the Pioneer League with that talent and strength. I agree with you. What a antique defense they run. And I agree that Fresch is a great higher. I think we will beat them this year again as long as they run the same type of defense.
good hire for south. but about them being the strongest and fastest. yeah they had all the good test numbers. but the game of football isnt played through test. it's played on the feild and south did not show any of their "great test numbers on the feild". My little sister can run south's defense they dont't even have a good scheme.
North Parent you couldn't be more correct. It wasn't the players who failed on the field this year for South. South's players were fantastic. It was the head coach who failed again by keeping that lousy defensive coordinator over there whoever this guy is. Their scheme is the worse scheme in all of high school football. Each year South fails on defense, not on offense these last two years because I saw the games and they should have beaten us (El Segundo) and they didn't. Our coaches simply out coached their coaches.
North and El Segundo Parent - Rumor has it that Waybright needs to go undefeated in league this next year or he is going to be replaced. He doesn't have to win in preseason, but he needs to win league outright or they are going to replace him. So Waybright had his fair shot from the administration for 6 or 7 years to pull it together and I also believe that 6 or 7 years is more than enough for any coach to show whether or not he has what it takes to be a head coach or just as an assistant. There can be no more excuses for Waybright after the season if he goes 500% or even 700%..........he needs to win league outright or he's just going to be a PE teacher and this is all. He really had a great chance to be around for a long time with the talent he had these past two years and he didn't convert and that's not a good thing at all, not for the school, the alumni, the teachers, the cheerleaders, the band, the neighborhood, the underclassmen, the future football players for South and not to the other coaches or the parents and the juniors and seniors.....etc...etc..
I just want to know one thing.. WHO is that number 11?
