PHOTO: Goalkeeper Chanell Crawford and the San Pedro girls soccer team found itself tangled in controversy, but the junior varsity players helped deliver a 5-0 first-round win.
With San Pedro facing a dire situation in girls soccer, Coach Gerhard Weber turned to his junior varsity players.
And they delivered in a big way.
Second-seeded San Pedro used a JV-laden team and still posted a 5-0 home win over No. 31 Huntington Park on Wednesday in the first round of the L.A. City Section Championships, advancing to play the Birmingham-Manual Arts winner on Friday in the second round.
San Pedro (14-2-1) was forced to play without most of its varsity players as a result from a brawl with Narbonne in the regular-season finale. The referee in the match assessed a red card to essentially every player on both teams after a fight broke out in the final minute.
The fallout cost Narbonne a chance to compete in the first round as school officials elected to forfeit a first-round game at Fremont.
San Pedro was fortunate that it was missing four players in its game against Narbonne -- goalkeeper and captain Chanell Crawford, Dominique Ma and Keyse MacKenzie were at a Youth and Government Conference in Sacramento and Reana Burich was sick and was not at the game. They were allowed to play Wednesday.
Ma scored two goals, and Crawford made six saves for her ninth shutout.
But junior varsity players Danette Lopez, Tatiana Padovan and Jaqueline Anaya also scored goals to provide an unxpected lift.
"This game is for whoever has been a JV player," Weber said. "They're unheralded, but in this case, they're heroes. They had a chance to take on a varsity team and dismantled them. They won the game for the varsitys of the world."
San Pedro only found out Tuesday that it would be without most of its varsity squad.
Weber tracked down his junior varsity captain, and they used a phone tree approach to ask the junior varsity players to help the varsity get through the first round.
"I've always claimed that San Pedro's JV team could beat some other varsity teams," Weber said. "Looking at some comparable results, our JV team is at about the same level as Carson, which finished fourth in our league.
"I know the JV players don't always feel respected or validated in their skills, but I am eternally grateful to them."
San Pedro is expected to welcome back its varsity players for Friday's match.

This goes back to what the city leagues are all about. Here you got an article which is a positive article about some JV girls helping out their school because the varsity girls didn't play. Now my question is why in the world does this article shed any positive light whatsoever on this situation Here is the fact, two thug losing city sewer schools who were taught no discipline by their parents or their coaches, the girls get into a team gang fight (lack of a better term) and are forced to sit out a few games. Now.............the article should talk about the savagry of high school girls acting like friggen baboons in a zoo rather than girls in an organized sport who lack all discipline and should be kicked out of school, not glorify JV level girls who had to pony up to stand in for the savages who got benced. This is not anything one sees in CIF schools. This only happens in city leagues. The city has gone mad. San Pedro is full of knuckle heads, fruits and punks. The coaches should have been canned and these chimpanzee skank soccer players put in juvenile hall for a month or two. Now that is the truth of the matter.
What an elitist load of crap! You don't see these types of things in CIF schools? These are the types of things seen at ALL levels of play in EVERY division in ANY sport. A rivalry gone bad to be sure and an unfortunate incident yes, but to make blanket statements about an entire City system, or besmirch the whole of the city of San Pedro because of the actions of the few is ridiculous. Get off your "high horse" Obama Sucks! You rant and rail about the "thugs" of the city and "baboons in a zoo" and then you sink to that level with your post. Sounds to me like you grew up with a silver spoon in your mouth and you turn up your nose at anything you deem "below your level"
LkwdPirate - easy now. Easy does it. Obama does suck and his ratings are dropping faster than a prom dress hitting the floor on prom night since he signed his spending bill this week but please put politics aside.
San Pedro and Narbonne's girls are classless and the bottom line is that there should be no positive story line found within such a disturbing incident whether younger girls ponied up or not. The story should have focused on cleaning up the classless athletes when they exist rather than a positive about younger girls playing well in the interim of the probationary period of the varsity girls who acted just like gang member hoes. At least, this is only one man's opinion and doesn't necessarily reflect the majority of the readers but usually it turns out that I am correct in about 95% of the things that I say and write.
Obama........my reply to you was in no way political. I make it a point to NEVER talk politics. My last post was only to address your comment about the supposedly "pure" CIF vs the "thug", "sewer" city (of which I am a educated, professional, intelligent product of...SP class of '91"). While the suspension of these girls for this incident was indeed a "black mark" the fact that their teammates (who were not involved in the incident) rallied and were able to "step up" should be celebrated instead of churning out yet another negative news piece. While everyone is entitled to his/her opinion that does not necessarily mean that they are right(95% success rate or not).
LkwdPirate I can agree with your point of view since you put it that way.
Born and raised in San Pedro I noticed we (San Pedro) get a bad rap no matter how far we travel. I was at the game and Narbonne was totally wrong and our girls defended themselves. the Narbonne coach even pulled one of our girls hair.(she was fired)Our coach kept the bench off the feild and all Narbonnes girls were on the feild fighting. We had only some girls fighting to defend themselves. If you were not there and did not see the action you can not pass judgement. The girl involved was basically jumped by 5 girls from Narbonne. Stay on the Hill
The truth is that San Pedro has been playing gutter type of sports for 30 years now and nothing has changed except that Narbonne is more gutter these days than Pedro is. That is the truth of the matter.
"Gutter type sports" and "30 years". Please!!! San Pedro Local has a definite point in saying that no matter where San Pedro goes they get a bad rap! Whether it be for their fans, their players, their coaches, or the city in general. All of you who talk down on the city, the school and the students sound like a bunch of jealous (of what I have no idea), ignorant, crybabies who the moment something positive about Pedro is written, come out of the woodwork and talk trash! Not sure where you other posters grew up, graduated from, or live now but you all make it seem that San Pedro is the only city in the surrounding area that has gang and/or drug problems or decaying neighborhoods or has been involved in games resulting in lost tempers or fights. Trashing Pedro just seems to be the "easy" and "popular" thing to do around here.
Someone said it best when they said that "San Pedro is where the ghetto meets the sea"..
Oh, how funny it is to read ignorance and arrogance in the same sentence! When "Obama Sucks" writes that these types of things don't happen in CIF schools" it clearly shows ignorance and arrogance. First of all, the "city league" is part of the CIF and are you inferring that there are no urban schools in your version of the CIF that are populated by, as you call them "thugs"? I think not. If you believe this sort of thing does not happen in other places, you must be living in a fantasy world somewhere where your fellow fantasy dwellers convince you that you are right "95% of the time" No one is that good! Maybe they are inclined to pat you on the back and send you on your way to shut down the ignorant and arrogant rantings!
As for Mr. Flintstone, I have taken the liberty of providing you with the meaning of the term "ghetto": A ghetto is described as a "portion of a city in which members of a minority group live especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure."
if you knew and understood anything about about San Pedro, you would understand that San Pedro can hardly be described as a "Ghetto".We San Pedrans come from a widely varied ethnic and socioeconomic background making us one of the most diverse communities within the City of Los Angeles, or Southern California for that matter. One thing that sets San Pedrans aside from any other local community is the level of community pride, what we refer to as "PEDRO PRIDE"
Sure, just like any other community we do have our problems, issues and bad apples, but in the long run "PEDRO PRIDE" with get us through any problems we are faced with!
it seems to me that the only people commenting here are pedro people. i am a jv soccer player from narbonne and i practically saw the whole thing.and to SAN PEDRO LOCAL, you are wrong; our coach did not pull anyone's hair and pedro's whole bench cleared out. all i saw was a severe combination of black ,as well as, white uniforms all bunched up and throwing blows.
to OBAMA SUCKS, we are not thugs. we are not hoes. we are girls who actually happen to have the highest gpa in all of our school's sports. if we were thugs or hoes, then i doubt we would even have the MINIMUM gpa to play. we'd be too busy in all our 'sewer' businesses that we wouldn't have tried out in the first place.
this wasn't san pedro's fault nor ours. it was the refs' fault because what they should've done was enforce the rules of the game and be more strict.
RE: our coach did not pull anyone's hair and pedro's whole bench cleared out.
JV PLAYER
I do not want to argue the situation because it will be argued in court. The young lady in question has pressed charges on your coach and one of the girls from our JV has it recorded on her cell phone.
Our bench did not clear, in fact our coach purposely kept them on the bench. The fight was started and by your 2 players hitting ours and then NARBONNES bench cleared.
Your coach would not have been fired unless it was true. The one point I agree with you on is the Referees. They did not control the game.
"PEDRO PRIDE" lives!!
Daily Breeze should not allow these racists ridiculous statements on the site. From the tone they are written by 15 year olds in PV. The Southbay looks horrible in these blogs. Read the one about PVs football coach... Unbelievably horrible things written about other people's kids. Read the ones about the football signees - bashing so many of them. Who are these people? Turn off the blogs. And, as for the racists Obama comments.. Would you want George back in office?
I do agree with Fred Flinstone in that Pedro has some nice areas, but its a tale of two cities because it has good, and then it has the cr*appy areas where they raise the people brain dead. And to PV Parent, I never thought that I would say this that I would have never wanted George back in office until after the first 35 days went by with Obama in office and look at what Obama did to this country in just 35 days. He destroyed it with over 3.3 trillion dollars of new spending which is going to force our children's children to finance it and he will now go down in history as the worst president ever and the market had gone down over 2000 points in 35 days and it is in the 6000 range far from the 13,000 range. I hated George Bush but I would take Bush back in one second after what America just saw Obama do to this country. And God bless our kids who compete in high school sports and God bless the Narbonne/Pedro rivalry which makes watching sports very fun and entertaining.
Real talk all thats a bunch of bull san pedro is stupid for even talking there smack....our coach never pulled anybody's hair and its honestly none of anybody's buissness if she was fired or not...yeah we rumbled and if i knew i was gonna get that consequence on not playing playoffs i would have done more damage to that collins chick...hahaha its just gonna be funny for next year to come....san pedro is full of crap anyways...yeah they might say were ghetto and stupid but id rather be that then a white slut.....hahaha....in plus that collins chick needs to learn how to take a fuckin slidetackle soccer isant for little girls so stop being a little bitch about it..with her: OMG!!!dud like shut the fuck up.....thats why she got cracked....hahah dumb ass....its all about the GAUCHOS!!!!
Really...Proud Ass Gaucho?? Do you really want to represent your school like that? First we must blame your parents for raising a potty mouth daughter who doesn't even use proper grammer and spelling..then we must put blame back on you because you, being in high school now should know right from wrong. But then again like you yourself stated.. you are from Narbonne...should we expect anything more from that school?
To:San Pedro Parent.........
Hahahha first of all you don't know my parents and if you did they would probably say the same thing to you getting into someone elses problems....
the parents have nothing to do with this whatever happened was between the players so keep your ass on the bench like every other stuck up parent from san pedro......
just hope your child or any other player can take a hit cause soccer isant for babies maybe thats where you went wrong as a parent......
