Dwayne Polee scored 11 points and Denzel Douglas added nine as defending L.A. City Section and state Division I champion Westchester knocked off
Long Beach Jordan, 50-38, Saturday in a semifinal game of the 41st Watts Summer Games at L.A. Southwest College.

Senior center Darius Williams scored 13 for Jordan and sophomore forward Isaiah Hicks and senior guard Reynard Tyler added 10 apiece.

Vladimir Morozov and See Han Lee, who sparked Torrance to its first-ever CIF boys swim title, had times that shined in the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association of America (NISCA) Zone 7 rankings. Zone 7 consists of Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah.

Morozov's best time of 19.97 seconds in the 50 freestyle (as part of the 200 freestyle relay) ranked first Zone 7, and his time of 48.78 in the 100 backstroke ranked second. He also had a time of 44.98 in the 100 freestyle that was fourth in Zone 7.

Morozov's partner in crime, Lee, had a time of 56.74 in the 100 breaststroke that was sixth in Zone 7, and a time of 1:52.50 in the 200 individual medley that was 13th in Zone 7.

Torrance's performance as a team in the final put them in ninth place in the mythical California high school championship, as tabulated by NISCA.

Tony Ciniglio

Tony Ciniglio is an 11-year veteran at the Daily Breeze and is the Prep-JC Editor. Ciniglio graduated from Malibu High (home of the mighty Sharks) in 1997 as part of the school's second graduating class before attending powerhouse Pepperdine (Class of 2001), thus shattering any reader's preconceived notion that he has any personal bias when it comes to South Bay Preps.

Dave Thorpe

Dave Thorpe was a self-proclaimed, slightly above average baseball player back in the day at Torrance's West High, who went on and had an unspectacular, injury-riddled stint as a third baseman at El Camino College. Trading bat for pen, Thorpe wrote sports for the Long Beach Union newspaper at Long Beach State University, then worked as the sports editor for the Palos Verdes Peninsula News for seven years before climbing down the Hill to the Daily Breeze, where he has been a sports writer covering local sports for more than two years.
