Here is the Daily Breeze Preseason Top 10 poll. Of course, things could all change after the first week's worth of games, but now it's starting to feel like high school football season.

Comment: Consider QB Conner Preston a genius for transferring to a team that boasts WRs Robert Woods, George Farmer and Paul Richardson. Expect a lot of offensive fireworks.

Comment: With games against Long Beach Poly, Mira Costa, Orange Lutheran and Los Alamitos, defending L.A. City co-champion Gauchos are either pretty confident or overly ambitious. Time will tell.

Comment: Virtually the entire roster is intact after last season's run to the CIF Southern Section Western Division final. Expect big things from the Mustangs.

Comment: Pirates lost nine of 11 from vaunted defense, but don't sleep on the defending L.A. City Section co-champions. Just ask Narbonne.

Comment: Daniel Torres is like the MacGyver of the South Bay: a jack of all trades. He won't let the Colts suffer a second consecutive losing season.

Comment: Olympians are finally accessorizing. They often get the skill players, but it appears they finally have a line to match.

Comment: RB Ryan Pierson earned the distinction of the South Bay's busiest workhorse last season, and he should have plenty of room to run behind a sizeable and beefy line.

Comment: The good news: QB Mike Bundy returns to give the Eagles a shot in the arm. The bad news: mostly everyone else is new.

Comment: Fe Fie Fo Fum. Coach Chris Ferragamo is trying to turn DE Fie Faaituala into a QB. So far, Ferragamo says Faaituala is the school's best QB since Fred Hessen.

Comment: The Saxons have plenty of speed, which is a good thing since they have a lot of ground to cover to replace QB B.J. Denker.

ON THE BUBBLE: Redondo, South Torrance, Palos Verdes

It seems the Mira Costa girls basketball team discovered a windfall Wednesday on its first day of school.

The Mustangs celebrated the transfer of Mikaela Lockwood, the stepdaughter of Lisa Leslie, and welcomed a freshman in Ashley Reece who ESPN has called a "Candace Parker Jr."

Not a bad day for the two-time defending Bay League champions.

"This is big. Really big for us," Mira Costa assistant coach Craig Takahashi said.

Lockwood is a 6-foot-1 junior from Midlothian High near Dallas who gives Mira Costa an inside presence to replace Whitney Daniels (University of San Francisco). Reece, a 5-foot-7 forward, is ranked No. 8 nationally in her class.

They allow returning star Jasmine Rutledge to play on the wing, making her more of an offensive threat to help offset the graduation of Amanda Johnson (University of Washington). And they complement point guard Kylie Nakamine.

"These two girls definitely help our rebounding, which was something we lacked last season," Takahashi said.

With Palos Verdes amassing a hoard of young talent, this tandem will provide a major boost for Mira Costa.

"PV was probably the favorite before school started, but now I think we're the favorites again," Takahashi said.

The high school football season is upon us. There will be game previews and some features tied to the area's "Week Zero" games this week, but the Daily Breeze's league-by-league season previews are scheduled to run Monday-Thursday next week. Here's the schedule:

PHOTO BY BRAD GRAVERSON: With the new football rule changes implemented by the L.A. City Section, Narbonne coach Manuel Douglas and San Pedro coach Mike Walsh will not be forced to share the City title like last season. Both coaches will also adjust to a new sideline rule that could prove to be aggravating.

A couple of things became pretty clear at Tuesday's L.A. City Section Media Day in downtown Los Angeles.

There will be one City champion per football division this season, and the already high number of flags in City football games will see an even more dramatic rise, at least in the beginning of the season with the addition of a coach's line that coaches will be forced to stand behind during games.

After last season's 21-21 tie between Narbonne and San Pedro in the City final, the City moved swiftly to eliminate the possibility of a championship game ending in a tie, forcing teams to go to an overtime period if the teams are deadlocked after four quarters.

"We will have one champion," Assistant Commissioner John Aguirre said.

The overtimes also will change with the City adopting the NCAA overtime rules that start at the 25-yard-line instead of the 10-yard-line. This was made after Mater Dei blasted the City's overtime rules on national television when Mater Dei and Carson played a triple-overtime thriller last season.

"That probably helped propel that rule change," Aguirre said.

And if you thought there were a lot of flags thrown during an L.A. City Section football game, just wait until you hear about the new coach's line.

Once the ball is live, coaches will need to back up three feet to give officials on the sideline room to move.

"It's for the officials safety -- I know when I coached, I collided with officials myself," said Aguirre, a former Carson football coach.

Coaches have had enough trouble keeping their players behind the player's line, which is always a point of contention during a City football game.

Just like the player's sideline rule, the coaches will get a warning, then a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty for a second offense. Remember, if a coach gets two unsportsmanlike penalties, they are ejected from the game.

Expect flags to fly.
