Thumbnail image for Woods.jpgPHOTO BY STEVE MCCRANK: Serra WR Robert Woods, the reigning Daily Breeze Player of the Year, leads one of the best receiving corps in the nation that also includes highly touted George Farmer and Los Alamitos transfer Paul Richardson.

Here is the Daily Breeze Preseason Top 10 poll. Of course, things could all change after the first week's worth of games, but now it's starting to feel like high school football season.

1. Serra (13-1 last season)
Up next: Today, vs. Silverado
Comment: Consider QB Conner Preston a genius for transferring to a team that boasts WRs Robert Woods, George Farmer and Paul Richardson. Expect a lot of offensive fireworks.

2. Narbonne (12-1-1)
Up next: Sept 11, vs. South East
Comment: With games against Long Beach Poly, Mira Costa, Orange Lutheran and Los Alamitos, defending L.A. City co-champion Gauchos are either pretty confident or overly ambitious. Time will tell.

3. Mira Costa (10-4)
Up next: Today, vs. Loyola at L.A. Valley College
Comment: Virtually the entire roster is intact after last season's run to the CIF Southern Section Western Division final. Expect big things from the Mustangs.

4. San Pedro (12-1-1)
Up next: Sept. 11 vs. Santee
Comment: Pirates lost nine of 11 from vaunted defense, but don't sleep on the defending L.A. City Section co-champions. Just ask Narbonne.

5. Carson (5-6)
Up next: Today, at Mater Dei
Comment: Daniel Torres is like the MacGyver of the South Bay: a jack of all trades. He won't let the Colts suffer a second consecutive losing season.

6. Leuzinger (6-4)
Up next: Today, at Hamilton
Comment: Olympians are finally accessorizing. They often get the skill players, but it appears they finally have a line to match.

7. Peninsula (5-6)
Up next: Sept. 11, at Lakewood
Comment: RB Ryan Pierson earned the distinction of the South Bay's busiest workhorse last season, and he should have plenty of room to run behind a sizeable and beefy line.

8. El Segundo (10-3)
Up next: Sept. 11, at West Torrance
Comment: The good news: QB Mike Bundy returns to give the Eagles a shot in the arm. The bad news: mostly everyone else is new.

9. Banning (4-7)
Up next: Sept. 11, at West Adams Prep<QA0>
Comment: Fe Fie Fo Fum. Coach Chris Ferragamo is trying to turn DE Fie Faaituala into a QB. So far, Ferragamo says Faaituala is the school's best QB since Fred Hessen.

10. North Torrance (9-2)
Up next: Sept. 11, vs. Verbum Dei
Comment: The Saxons have plenty of speed, which is a good thing since they have a lot of ground to cover to replace QB B.J. Denker.

ON THE BUBBLE: Redondo, South Torrance, Palos Verdes

wow carson at number five? are u kidding me? they have practically their whole team coming back including their o line. losing to serra last year was a fluke. both narbonne and pedro lost the majority of their team. i would say carson is #1. but i guess well wait and see when carson beats serra if these rankings change.

Correction, North has no speed. They have a guy who runs a 4.7. Is that speed in which to worry about?

Does San Pedro have any one of substance on their schedule? Or is Mike Walsh afraid to lift his skirt again?

Pedro didn't play any one of substance last year and from what I remember they were co-champs. A tough nonleague doesn't do too much good unless your are gonna win it all. Carson had a tough nonleague last year and it didn't help much. Pedro does play some cupcakes but they use that to finetune their team and finalize their positions to get ready for league.

Didn't I tell you that you were wrong daily Breeze in your rankings yesterday before the games? Yes I did. Leuzinger is terrible and should't be in the top 10.

serra won 61-0 last night.

hmmmmmmm.

Carson should be #1???

If I recall...didn't Narbonne beat them like 30-0 AT Carson at the end of last season??

Correction North has an young man who runs a 4.4 and bench press 290. Now I think that counts as speed and strenth.

1 guy?

Serra has 14 guys that run a 4.4.

I'm sure Narbonne has close to that.

YOU CAN HAVE 100 GUYS THAT RUN 4.4 ! YOU HAVE TO HAVE GOOD FOOTBALL SMARTS AND GOOD COACHES ... YOU CAN WIN 61-0 IF YOU PLAY SUBPAR TEAMS EVERY WEEK !!!

I have to agree with you David , but you know how they do Carson every year, no respect, but they will get it after they beat Serra tomorrow night.

what does last year's Narbonne Game has to do with this year's rankings? Did Oaks Christian beat Serra 62-21 last year? I thought so

Oaks beat Serra 62-28 to be factual. So if that was the case, guess what they would have done to Carson?? I thought so.

Serra showed that the Daily Breeze pre-season #1 rating is justified. If David thinks the Serra win over Carson last year was a 'fluke', guess he'll consider Serra's win over Carson this year was just bad luck - for Carson that is ... Reality is that Serra is the most talented and best coached team in the region whose success this season will give all the "Serra Haters" plenty to whine about. Go Cavs!!

Roosevelt Long you lying bast*rd. North has no one who runs a 4.4. Your fastest guy ran a 4.7 in the Iron Man competition this year under laser timing. Who do you think you are trying to fool you drooling numb skull?

Serra is the class of the South Bay and has been for years. Carson? Great tradition, but tradition doesn't win games. Serra vs Taft is the Cav's game of the year, not Carson. And the season finale vs Cathedral is shaping up nicely also. That one will be televised on Fox & should be a good one.

Can we finally put to rest who the best team in the South Bay is?? Carson-No, San Pedro-No, Narbonne-No, Redondo, Pennisula, Mico, Any Torrance School??? He*& to the NO! It's the small school in Gardena with the great Talent and fine Education that I'm glad I attended and my family as well. Go Cavs!

Serra has always had a class program as long as I can remember, and that goes back to 1966.

This team has great potential, and I wish them the best this season.

Hopefully, they can match the 14-0 season we had in 1989 and the State Championship.
